Overview
EN 886:2004 - published by CEN - is the European standard for polyaluminium hydroxide silicate sulfate (PASS) used to treat water intended for human consumption. The standard defines the product identity (CAS 131148-05-5), physical and chemical description, minimum purity requirements, relevant analytical and sampling methods, labelling, transport and storage rules, and safety guidance (Annex B). It supersedes EN 886:2001 and was approved by CEN on 30 September 2004.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Identification & form
- Chemical name: polyaluminium hydroxide silicate sulfate (synonym: PASS).
- Commercial form: liquid; fully miscible with water (may hydrolyse and precipitate on dilution).
- Composition & performance parameters
- Minimum active matter (Al content): ≥ 40 g/kg.
- Aluminium content tolerance: ±3% of manufacturer’s declared value.
- Relative basicity (OH/3Al mole ratio): > 0.35.
- Insoluble matter: ≤ 25 g/kg of Al.
- Impurity limits
- EN 886 sets trace-metal limits (mg/kg of Al) for types 1–3. Examples include:
- Arsenic (As): max 14 / 40 / 100
- Cadmium (Cd): max 3 / 50 / 100
- Mercury (Hg): max 4 / 10 / 20
- Lead (Pb): max 40 / 200 / 800
- EN 886 sets trace-metal limits (mg/kg of Al) for types 1–3. Examples include:
- Test methods & sampling
- Sampling follows ISO 3165 and ISO 6206 principles; analytical methods per EN 1302.
- Labelling, transport & storage
- Safety labelling: classified as Xi (Irritant) with R36, and recommended safety phrases S26, S37/39.
- Not classified as dangerous for road, rail, sea, air transport in commercial form.
- Marking must include product name, trade name/grade, net mass, supplier, and “This product conforms to EN 886”.
- Storage: corrosion-resistant tanks; avoid contact with chlorites, hypochlorites, sulfites and certain metals (galvanized metal, aluminium, copper, zinc). Incompatible with iron salts and aluminium sulfate.
Applications and Who Uses This Standard
- Primary use: PASS is used as a coagulant/flocculant in drinking-water treatment plants to remove turbidity and suspended solids.
- Typical users:
- Water utilities and municipal treatment plant operators
- Chemical suppliers and manufacturers of aluminium-based coagulants
- Water treatment consultants, laboratory analysts, and regulatory authorities
- Procurement and safety officers responsible for storage, transport and handling
- Practical value: Ensures product quality, trace metal control, safe handling, consistent dosing performance, and regulatory transparency for drinking-water applications.
Related Standards and References
- EN 1302 - analytical methods for aluminium-based coagulants
- ISO 3165, ISO 6206 - sampling of chemical products
- EU Directive 98/83/EC referenced for drinking-water parametric values
Conformance to EN 886:2004 helps manufacturers and water suppliers demonstrate product quality and safe use of PASS in drinking-water treatment while noting that national regulations and approvals may still apply.
