- Abstract
Revision of EN 301 489-10 to include the U.K. and Irish national variants of CT1 cordless telephones. This standard has one common requirements part plus specific parts for each of the radio equipment and services. This harmonised standard under the EMC Directive and article 3.1b of the R&TTE Dirctive. This does not include EMC requirements for equipment covered by the Marine Equipment Directive.

SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 301 489-10 V1.2.1 for First Generation CT1 and CT1+ and Second Generation CT2 cordless telephone equipment. It specifies EMC test conditions, performance assessment and performance criteria for cordless telephone equipment and associated ancillary equipment, so manufacturers, test labs and conformity teams can judge whether the equipment behaves acceptably during electromagnetic disturbances.
What does SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 specify?
SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 covers the EMC assessment of CT1, CT1+ and CT2 cordless telephone equipment together with associated ancillary equipment. It is intended to be used with EN 301 489-1, and it gives the cordless-telephone-specific test setup, performance checks and acceptance criteria that supplement the common technical requirements.
The scope excludes antenna-port technical specifications and emissions from the enclosure port of the radio equipment, because those are handled in the relevant product standards. The document is also framed as a harmonised standard under the EMC Directive and the R&TTE Directive, and it does not cover EMC requirements for equipment within the Marine Equipment Directive.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Informative definitions of the CT2, CT1 and CT1+ equipment types and their operating bands |
| Annex B | Bibliography |
The document is organised into clauses on scope, references, definitions and abbreviations, test conditions, performance assessment, performance criteria, and an applicability overview.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 489-10:2002?
Clause 4 starts from the test conditions in EN 301 489-1 and adds cordless-telephone-specific arrangements. For transmitter testing, the equipment shall use normal test modulation; for speech equipment the audio input may be applied acoustically or through existing electrical connections, while non-speech equipment uses digital input through a cable, test jig or host equipment. In practice, this means the EUT has to be tested in a setup that reflects how it is actually used.
Clause 4.3 defines exclusion bands. For CT2, the exclusion band for transmitter and receiver parts extends from 820.9 MHz to 911.5 MHz. For CT1 and CT1+, the receiver exclusion band follows the operating band with a 5% extension at each end, and the transmitter exclusion band is ±50 kHz around the operating frequency. In practice, these are the frequencies that are not used for measuring the wanted signal as unwanted emission or interference.
Clause 4.4 deals with narrow band responses in receivers. A response is identified by a rise in speech output level for speech equipment, or by an increase in BER (Bit Error Ratio) for non-speech equipment, and a dropped link may also be used. The nominal offsets used for the identification process are ±1 MHz and then ±1.5 MHz for CT2, CT1 and CT1+ receivers.
Clause 5.2 gives two ways to assess host-dependent equipment and plug-in cards. The manufacturer may use a composite equipment combination with a specific host, or a test jig together with three different hosts. This matters because embedded radio parts can behave differently depending on the host electronics, power and layout.
Clause 5.3 and Clause 6 require checks on primary functions, maintained communications links, and stored user data. For speech equipment, the document also uses the audio breakthrough test, where analogue speech circuits are monitored and the output level is compared with the pre-test reference. In practice, the equipment must keep its link and not lose user settings while being stressed.
Clause 5.5 classifies equipment by intended power source. Equipment intended for vehicle battery use is also treated as mobile equipment, and equipment intended for AC mains use is also treated as base station equipment. That affects which EMC treatment applies during assessment.
Clause 6 sets separate performance criteria for CT, TT, CR and TR phenomena, plus ancillary equipment tested on its own. The common expectation is that the communications link is maintained, unintentional transmission does not occur, and declared user functions and stored data are preserved.
What terms does SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 define?
- CT1 equipment - First generation cordless telephone apparatus operating in the CT1 bands listed in Annex A.
- CT1+ equipment - First generation cordless telephone apparatus operating in the 885 MHz to 887 MHz and 930 MHz to 932 MHz bands.
- CT2 equipment - Second generation cordless telephone apparatus operating in the 864.1 MHz to 868.1 MHz band.
- Host equipment - Equipment that provides the main user function and houses the radio part, which depends on it for added functionality.
- Speech equipment - Cordless telephone equipment with microphones, loudspeakers or similar transducers for acoustic audio signals.
- Non-speech equipment - Cordless telephone equipment intended for digital data rather than acoustic speech.
- Equipment Under Test (EUT) - The item being assessed in the EMC test.
Who uses SIST EN 301 489-10:2002?
Manufacturers of CT1, CT1+ and CT2 cordless telephone equipment use this standard to design and document EMC compliance. Test laboratories use it to set up immunity and emission tests, including speech and data arrangements. Conformity assessment teams, quality managers and buyers use it to check that the right equipment class, host configuration and performance criteria are being applied.
What changed in SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 from the previous edition?
This revision of EN 301 489-10 adds the U.K. and Irish national variants of CT1 cordless telephones.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 489-10:2002?
| Reference | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 301 489-1 | Common technical requirements, general test conditions, and the baseline emission and immunity framework |
| EN 300 176 (all parts) | DECT approval test specification, used here as a reference for acoustic test arrangements |
What does the SIST EN 301 489-10:2002 document contain?
The document contains clauses for test conditions, performance assessment, performance criteria and an applicability overview. It includes specific procedures for transmitter and receiver test signals, exclusion bands, narrow band response identification, host-dependent equipment assessment, loss of user control functions and audio breakthrough testing. Annex A gives the operating bands and type definitions for CT1, CT1+ and CT2, while Annex B lists bibliography items. Two figures show the audio breakthrough measurement and calibration set-ups used during testing.
