Overview

EN 935:2004 (CEN) is the European standard that specifies requirements for aluminium iron(III) chloride (monomeric) and aluminium iron(III) chloride hydroxide (monomeric) used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard describes product identification, physical and chemical properties, minimum purity criteria, test and sampling methods, labelling/transportation requirements and rules for safe handling (see Annex A and normative Annex B).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and identification: chemical names, synonyms (e.g., bauxite or clay hydroxide chloride for the hydroxide), commercial form (liquid) and typical physical data (appearance, density, viscosity).
  • Composition and active matter: active aluminium content must be > 40 g/kg (Al g/kg). Manufacturer-declared aluminium and iron contents must be within ±3% of declared values.
  • Ratios and basicity:
    • Fe/Al ratio limits: < 0.50 for aluminium iron(III) chloride hydroxides (monomeric) and < 1.0 for aluminium iron(III) chlorides (monomeric).
    • Relative basicity (OH/3(Al+Fe)): 0–0.35 for hydroxides; zero for monomeric chlorides.
  • Impurities and by‑products:
    • Insoluble matter < 25 g/kg (Al + Fe).
    • Trace metal limits specified (examples: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, antimony, selenium) with tiered limits depending on product type - detailed values are given in Table 1 of EN 935:2004.
  • Sampling and test methods: sampling rules refer to ISO 3165 and ISO 6206; analytical methods reference EN 1302 (aluminium‑based coagulants - analytical methods).
  • Safety, labelling and transport:
    • Product may be classified as Xi (irritant) or C (corrosive) depending on composition and concentration, with corresponding R/S phrases and PPE guidance.
    • Transport classification follows UN 1760 and applicable RID/ADR/IMDG/IATA rules where relevant.
  • Use guidance: notes on hydrolysis behavior, pH dependence and potential for precipitate formation on dilution.

Applications and users

This standard is intended for practical users who handle or specify coagulants and polymeric aluminium‑iron products for drinking‑water treatment:

  • Water utilities and municipal water engineers specifying coagulants for clarification and solids removal.
  • Chemical manufacturers and suppliers producing or certifying aluminium iron(III) chloride products.
  • Analytical and quality control laboratories performing acceptance testing and compliance checks.
  • Transporters, storage operators and health & safety officers responsible for labelling, packaging and safe handling.
  • Regulators and procurement teams assessing conformity of supplied coagulants to European product requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 1302 - Analytical methods for aluminium‑based coagulants (referenced).
  • ISO 3165, ISO 6206 - Sampling standards for chemical products.
  • EU classification/packaging regulations (e.g., Directive 67/548/EEC references) and UN/ADR/RID/IMDG/IATA transport rules for hazardous liquids.

EN 935:2004 is a practical reference for ensuring product quality, safety and trace‑metal control when using aluminium iron(III) chloride and related hydroxide chlorides in drinking‑water treatment.

4 Purity criteria
4.1 General
This document specifies the minimum purity requirements for aluminium iron (III) chloride (monomeric) and
aluminium iron (III) chloride hydroxide (monomeric) used for the treatment of water intended for human
consumption. Limits are given for impurities commonly present in the products. Depending on the raw material and
the manufacturing process other impurities may be present and, if so, this shall be notified to the user and when
necessary to relevant authorities.
NOTE Users of these products should check the national regulations in order to clarify whether it is of appropriate purity for
treatment of water intended for human consumption, taking into account raw water quality, required dosage, contents of other
impurities and additives used in the products not stated in this product standard.
Limits have been given for impurities and chemical parameters where these are likely to be present in significant
quantities from the current production processes and raw materials. If the production process or raw materials
leads to significant quantities of impurities, by-products or additives being present, this shall be notified to the user.
4.2 Composition of commercial product
The concentration of active matter (aluminium ion content) expressed as grams per kilogram of product (Al g/kg)
shall be greater than 40 g/kg. The contents of aluminium and iron shall be within ± 3 % of the manufacturer's
declared values. The ratio Fe/Al shall be less than 0,50 for aluminium iron (III) chloride hydroxides (monomeric)
and less than 1,0 for aluminium iron (III) chlorides (monomeric).
The relative basicity, expressed as the mole ratio OH/3(Al + Fe), shall be within the range 0 to 0,35 for aluminium
iron (III) chloride hydroxides (monomeric). For aluminium iron (III) chloride (monomeric), the basicity is zero.
Aluminium iron (III) chloride (monomeric) often have a free acidity.
4.3 Impurities and main by-products
