Overview

SIST EN ISO 8437-2:2021/A1:2026 is an important amendment to the safety requirements and test procedures for snow throwers, specifically focusing on pedestrian-controlled models. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with international standards (ISO 8437-2:2019/Amd 1:2026), this standard ensures that snow throwers operated by walking users meet rigorous safety and performance criteria. By integrating this amendment, manufacturers, importers, and users are better equipped to address the latest safety considerations in snow removal equipment, supporting compliance and risk reduction.

Key Topics

  • Scope Extension: This amendment specifically updates and clarifies safety requirements for combustion engine-powered, pedestrian-controlled snow throwers.
  • Harmonization: Aligns the document with related parts of the ISO 8437 series, particularly ISO 8437-1 and ISO 8437-4, for comprehensive and cohesive safety assessment.
  • Verification Methods: Emphasizes application of standardized test procedures to confirm that safety requirements are met for pedestrian-controlled snow throwers.
  • User Protection: Focuses on minimizing risks for operators and bystanders during typical operation and maintenance tasks.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Provides a reference framework for national and international regulations concerning machinery safety for snow removal in public, commercial, and residential environments.

Applications

The practical value of SIST EN ISO 8437-2:2021/A1:2026 lies in its wide applicability across the snow-removal industry. Key use cases include:

  • Manufacturers: Essential for those engineering or assembling pedestrian-controlled snow throwers. Adherence to this standard promotes product safety, reliability, and market acceptance in both the European and international arenas.
  • Compliance & Certification Bodies: Serves as the technical baseline for conformity assessments, CE marking, and safety certifications of snow throwers intended for pedestrian operation.
  • Distributors & Importers: Ensures that imported or distributed products meet the mandatory safety requirements, reducing legal and reputational risk.
  • Municipalities & Contractors: Provides guidance for safe equipment selection, reducing injuries associated with snow removal on walkways, driveways, and public paths.
  • End Users: Offers reassurance to both professional operators and homeowners that certified pedestrian-controlled snow throwers meet current safety standards and minimize operational risks.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to snow thrower safety, the following related standards should be considered:

  • ISO 8437-1: General safety requirements and test procedures for all snow throwers.
  • ISO 8437-4: Additional requirements covering further aspects of snow thrower design and operation.
  • EN ISO 12100: General principles for machinery safety and risk assessment.
  • ISO/TC 23/SC 13: Standards related to powered lawn and garden equipment, providing broader context for safety in outdoor power equipment.
  • EN 62841 Series: Safety standards for electrical motor-operated tools, including some snow thrower models.

By following SIST EN ISO 8437-2:2021/A1:2026 and its supporting documents, stakeholders in the snow removal equipment market can ensure top-tier safety, improve product quality, and enhance operator confidence in pedestrian-controlled snow throwers.
