Printing and business paper - Determination of toner adhesion

This European Standard specifies the determination of the adhesion of dry toner on paper sheets, printed with imaging machines such as copiers and printers. The chosen measuring range allows discrimination of toner adhesion around the level found with many common paper and machine combinations. Since divers imaging processes give different toner adhesion, the described method at constant IGT speed is not advised to compare degree of toner adhesion between different types of machines.

Overview

EN 12283:2002 - "Printing and business paper - Determination of toner adhesion" (CEN) defines a laboratory method to measure the adhesion of dry toner on paper printed by imaging machines (copiers, laser printers). The standard specifies a quantitative IGT picking test procedure that yields reproducible toner-adhesion values for many common paper–machine combinations. It also emphasizes that results are machine-dependent and that the method at constant IGT speed is not recommended for comparing different imaging technologies.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of dry toner adhesion on paper sheets printed with dry toner imaging processes (copiers, printers).
  • Principle: Create solid black areas on A4 sheets, subject printed area to an IGT picking test and compare optical density before and after picking.
  • Sampling & conditioning:
    • Sampling per EN ISO 186.
    • Condition test pieces at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity (EN 20187) for at least 8 hours.
  • Test image: A4 original containing two heavy solid black stripes, 30 mm wide and parallel to the long side (or equivalent high-density digital image for printers).
  • Apparatus & materials:
    • Any commercial dry-toner imaging machine in good working order.
    • IGT tester per ISO 3783 with 20 mm discs.
    • Medium-viscosity picking oil (ISO 3783).
    • Optical densitometer for density readings.
    • Internal reference paper for machine calibration.
  • Test settings: IGT printing force 800 N and constant speed 0.4 m/s.
  • Calculation: Toner adhesion T = DIGT / Dsolid_black, where DIGT is mean optical density after IGT picking and Dsolid_black is mean optical density of untreated black area.
  • Quality control: Use an internal reference sample; record mean and standard deviation. Repeatability observed coefficient of variation 5–15% in intertests.

Applications and users

  • Paper manufacturers and R&D teams: evaluate how paper surface and coatings affect dry-toner adhesion.
  • Quality control laboratories and third‑party testing services: routine checks of paper batches for print performance.
  • Copier/printer manufacturers and service engineers: verify machine performance with an internal reference and diagnose toner-transfer issues.
  • Procurement and specification writers: include toner adhesion data in product datasheets and tender documentation.
  • Print buyers and office managers: assess paper suitability for high-volume or high-density toner printing.

Limitations

  • Results are machine‑dependent; the method at constant IGT speed should not be used to compare toner adhesion across different types of imaging machines or technologies.
