(Main)Leather - Chemical determination of metal content - Part 1: Extractable metals (ISO/DIS 17072-1:2026)
- Abstract
This document specifies a method for the determination of extractable metals in leather using extraction with an acid artificial-perspiration solution and subsequent determination with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or spectrometry of atomic fluorescence (SFA).
This method determines extractable metals in leather; it is not compound-specific or specific to the oxidation state of the metals. This method is especially suitable for determining the extractable chromium in chromium-tanned leathers.

oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 is a leather test method for measuring extractable metals after extraction with an acid artificial-perspiration solution. It specifies laboratory procedures and instrument options for reporting metal content in leather on a dry-mass basis, with particular usefulness for extractable chromium in chromium-tanned leathers.
What does oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 specifies how to determine extractable metals in leather by first extracting a prepared leather test specimen and then measuring the extract with ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AAS or SFA. The method is for extractable metals in general, not for a specific compound form or oxidation state.
In practice, that means the standard is suited to comparative chemical testing of leather materials, including finished goods where sampling may be more difficult. The document also names many applicable metals, such as chromium, nickel, lead and mercury.
The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, terms and definitions, principle, reagents, apparatus and materials, sampling and test specimen preparation, procedure, calculation and expression of results, and test report, followed by an informative annex.
| Annex | What it covers |

| Annex A | Interlaboratory test results and quantification limits |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026?
The key requirements of oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 are the controlled extraction conditions, the preparation of the leather specimen, and the use of validated instrumental analysis. These points matter because the result is only comparable if the same extraction chemistry, time, temperature and reporting basis are used.
Sampling and specimen preparation
Clause 7 requires sampling from whole hides or skins according to ISO 2418. If the leather comes from finished products such as shoes or garments, the sampling details have to be recorded in the test report. Specimen preparation follows ISO 4044, and wet leather with more than 30 % moisture should be pre-dried before extraction.
The standard also calls for volatile matter determination in accordance with ISO 4684, and the same leather specimen can be used for extraction. In practice, this supports a dry-mass result that can be compared across samples.
Extraction conditions
Clause 8.1 and 8.2 specify a freshly prepared acid artificial-perspiration solution and a fixed extraction at 37 °C for about 4 hours. The leather is extracted with a defined liquid volume, then filtered before analysis.
This matters because the extraction is the core of the method. The standard states that the extraction conditions shall be followed exactly, since deviations can change the result.
Analytical options
Clause 8.3 allows direct analysis of the extract by ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AAS or SFA, with calibration against reference solutions. ISO 11885, ISO 15586, ISO 17294-2 and ISO 17852 are used for the recommended instrument settings.
For mercury, the method adds gold solution during extraction. The standard also warns that filtration may cause partial loss of Sn, Sb or Pb, so users need to check recovery when these metals are of interest.
Calculation and reporting
Clause 9 reports the metal content as mass fraction in milligrams per kilogram of dry leather. The calculation uses the measured instrument concentration, the extraction volume, the dry mass of the specimen and any dilution factor.
In practice, this makes results suitable for specification checks and inter-laboratory comparison, provided the dry-mass basis is used consistently.
Test report
Clause 10 lists the minimum reporting items: the laboratory name, a reference to ISO 17072-1, the analytical system used, the leather description, dry matter results, the extracted metal results and any deviations. This is the information a buyer, auditor or customer needs to judge whether the test was performed under the standard method.
What terms does oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 define?
- Acid artificial-perspiration solution - The extraction liquid prepared from L-histidine monohydrochloride monohydrate, sodium chloride and sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, adjusted to pH 5.5.
- Test specimen - The prepared leather piece taken for extraction and analysis.
- ICP-OES - Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, used here to measure metals in the extract.
- ICP-MS - Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, another instrument option for measuring elemental concentrations.
- AAS - Atomic absorption spectrometry, used for determining metals in the extract.
- SFA - Spectrometry of atomic fluorescence, used here for mercury analysis.
- Dry matter - The leather mass basis used to express the final result as mg/kg.
Who uses oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026?
oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 is used by leather testing laboratories, tanneries, quality managers, and compliance teams that need a repeatable method for metal screening in leather. It is also relevant to buyers and suppliers of leather goods, especially footwear and garments, where sampling may need to be documented carefully.
What changed in oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN ISO 17072-1:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 17072-1:2019. The foreword states three technical changes: all occurrences of “sample” were replaced by “test specimen”, the reference to ISO 2418 was modified, and the last sentence in clause 9 was deleted.
