Overview

The kSIST FprEN ISO 11642:2025 standard, titled Leather - Tests for colour fastness - Colour fastness to water (ISO 11642:2025), establishes a uniform method to evaluate how leather products resist color changes and staining when exposed to water. Published by CEN in collaboration with ISO and IULTCS, this standard applies to leather of all types and at every stage of processing, ensuring reliable and consistent assessment essential for quality control in the leather industry.

This standard specifies test procedures, apparatus, and evaluation criteria designed to measure the color fastness to water-one of the critical properties influencing the durability and aesthetic quality of leather products.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
kSIST FprEN ISO 11642:2025 covers testing leather’s resistance to color change and staining caused by exposure to water. It applies to all types of leather and stages of production, including raw, finished, and processed leather.

  • Test Principle
The test involves soaking a leather sample and adjacent fabric in demineralized water, assembling a composite test piece under controlled pressure, and incubating it at a set temperature. After drying, changes in color and staining are assessed visually or instrumentally according to standardized grey scales.

  • Testing Apparatus and Materials
The method requires specific apparatus including a stainless steel frame with a calibrated weight to apply consistent pressure, glass or acrylic plates, ovens, vacuum desiccators, and precise grey scales for color evaluation. Demineralized water compliant with ISO 3696 is used to ensure test consistency.

  • Preparation of Samples
Samples can be tested with the leather finish intact or deliberately broken to simulate abrasion effects. Adjacent fabrics representing various fiber types are used to assess staining. The method includes guidelines for specimen size and preparation to achieve reproducible results.

  • Evaluation and Reporting
The standard uses internationally recognized grey scales to assess color change and staining intensity. Both visual and instrumental assessments are accepted, improving objectivity and precision in evaluation. The results provide a basis for quality control and product development decisions.

Applications

kSIST FprEN ISO 11642:2025 is essential for manufacturers, laboratories, and quality assurance professionals involved in leather production and product testing. Practical applications include:

  • Quality Control in Leather Manufacturing
Ensuring finished and semi-finished leather meets water resistance requirements affecting consumer satisfaction and product longevity.

  • Product Development and R&D
Testing new tanning, dyeing, or finishing processes to improve water fastness while maintaining desirable leather aesthetics.

  • Performance Verification for Industrial and Commercial Uses
Leather components used in upholstery, footwear, automotive interiors, and fashion accessories benefit from verified water fastness to prevent color degradation in normal use.

  • Regulatory and Compliance Testing
Providing standardized, reproducible data that can support adherence to national and international product specifications and trade regulations.

Related Standards

kSIST FprEN ISO 11642:2025 references and complements several important standards which enhance test accuracy and comparability:

  • ISO 7906 – Leather - Tests for colour fastness - General principles of testing
  • ISO 2418 – Leather - Position and preparation of specimens for testing
  • ISO 105 Series – Textiles - Tests for colour fastness (including sub-parts A02, A03, A04, A05, F01-F10 related to grey scale ratings and fabric specifications)
  • ISO 3696 – Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods

Together, these standards form a comprehensive framework used worldwide to ensure leather products are assessed with precision and reliability for colour fastness to water, supporting industry best practices and consumer confidence.

This standard is a critical tool for professionals engaged in leather testing and production, enabling consistent evaluation of water-induced color changes to uphold high product quality and enhance market competitiveness.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a world-wide organization of professional leather societies to further
the advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are responsible
for establishing international methods for the sampling and testing of leather. ISO recognizes IULTCS as an
international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather.
This document was prepared by the Fastness Tests Commission of the International Union of Leather
Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUF Commission, IULTCS), in collaboration with the European
Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 289, Leather, in accordance with the
Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 11642:2012), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— update of normative references, in particular to ISO 2418 and to ISO 7906.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
