Influence of organic materials on water intended for human consumption - Organoleptic assessment of water in storage systems - Part 1: Test method

This European Standard specifies a test method for determining the organoleptic properties (odour, flavour, colour and turbidity) of test waters after their contact with products made from organic materials used in storage systems (tanks, reservoirs, ancillaries and their coatings both for factory and site applied products).
Products containing cementitious materials are not covered by this standard.
The test method described in this standard is applicable to products to be used under various conditions for the storage of water intended for human consumption and raw water used for the manufacture of water intended for human consumption. Coatings or protective layers on products which are not intended to be in contact with these types of waters are not covered by this method.
This standard specifies the test method comprising a set of procedures with and without a disinfection pretreatment and possible temperatures for the test waters. The use of the disinfection pretreatment and the choice of the test temperature are dependant on the relevant national regulations and/or the system or product standards.

Overview

EN 14395-1:2004 (CEN) defines a standardized test method for organoleptic assessment of water after contact with products made from organic materials used in storage systems. The standard addresses how to determine changes in odour, flavour, colour and turbidity of water intended for human consumption (and raw water used to produce it) following contact with tanks, reservoirs, ancillaries and coatings - including both factory-made and site-applied products. Products containing cementitious materials and coatings not intended to contact such waters are excluded.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to organic-material products in storage systems for drinking water and to raw waters used for producing drinking water.
    • Excludes cementitious materials and non-water-contact coatings.
  • Test principle
    • Migration tests: contact test pieces with test water and assess migrated substances over repeated cycles.
    • Typical conditions: 72 h at 23 °C (chlorinated and unchlorinated tests) or short-term contact at elevated temperatures (specified 60–85 °C range) depending on product/system standards or national regulation.
  • Organoleptic measurements
    • Odour and flavour assessed by a trained testing panel to determine Threshold Odour Number (TON) and Threshold Flavour Number (TFN) (see EN 1622).
    • Colour and turbidity measured using referenced ISO methods (EN ISO 7887, EN ISO 7027).
  • Reagents and water types
    • Reference water must be free of perceptible odour, flavour, colour and turbidity.
    • Disinfection pretreatment option: chlorine dosing (example: disinfection treatment water at 50 ± 5 mg/L Cl2 prepared from sodium hypochlorite) and dechlorination with sodium thiosulfate.
    • Definitions and use of test water, blank water, and flushing water are specified.
  • Test environment and reporting
    • Test environment for organoleptic assessment follows EN 1622.
    • Detailed test report content and expression of results are required.

Applications and users

  • Who uses EN 14395-1:2004
    • Manufacturers of storage vessels, coatings, lining and ancillary components.
    • Independent testing laboratories performing migration and organoleptic testing.
    • Water utilities and public health authorities conducting material acceptance and product approval.
    • Product and system standards developers referencing material-dependent test requirements.
  • Practical uses
    • Pre-market product testing and quality assurance for water-contact materials.
    • Material compatibility evaluation to prevent taste, odour or visual contamination of drinking water.
    • Supporting regulatory compliance and procurement specifications for storage systems.

Related standards

  • EN 1622: Determination of TON and TFN (odour/flavour)
  • EN ISO 7393-2: Free and total chlorine (colorimetric)
