Overview
ISO 2820:1974/Amd 1:1996 is an important amendment to the International Standard ISO 2820:1974, which specifies the method of trimming raw hides of cattle and horses. Developed by the ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 120 (Leather), Subcommittee SC 1 (Raw hides and skins), this amendment introduces minor technical updates to enhance clarity and accuracy in terminology without altering the fundamental procedure.
The primary focus of this amendment is the substitution of the term "cattle" with "bovine animals" throughout the document to better reflect the scope of applicable raw hides. Additionally, it modifies specific trimming instructions such as replacing "ears" with "cheek" in one section for more precise guidance. This standard is maintained under the auspices of ISO, the global federation of national standards bodies ensuring international consensus on material and process requirements.
Key Topics
Terminology Update
- Replaces “cattle” with the broader term “bovine animals”, aligning with evolving industry language and classifications.
Trimming Methodology
- Defines standardized procedures for trimming raw hides from bovine animals and horses, ensuring consistency in raw material preparation.
Precision in Trimming Areas
- Clarifies the anatomical references used during trimming, such as substituting "ears" with "cheek" in Clause 4.1, enhancing practical application.
Technical Committee Involvement
- Developed by ISO/TC 120/SC 1, reflecting expertise in leather raw materials to maintain internationally accepted best practices.
Scope of Amendment
- Focuses solely on minor technical amendments for terminological precision without changing the core trimming method.
Applications
ISO 2820:1974/Amd 1:1996 has practical value in industries and sectors involved in processing raw hides and skins, particularly where leather quality and uniformity are paramount. Key applications include:
Leather Manufacturing
- Raw hide preparation adhering to consistent trimming standards reduces defects and enables higher quality leather production.
Quality Control in Hides Processing
- Standardized trimming methods facilitate reliable quality assessment for hides from bovine animals and horses.
Supply Chain Consistency
- Ensures uniform raw material preparation across different suppliers, supporting downstream tanneries and leather goods manufacturers.
Trade and Compliance
- Adoption aids in meeting international trade regulations and buyer specifications by adhering to recognized trimming standards.
Educational Resources
- Useful reference for training leather workers and technical staff in proper handling and trimming procedures.
Related Standards
When working with ISO 2820:1974/Amd 1:1996, it is beneficial to consider additional related international standards to ensure comprehensive compliance in leather processing and raw material management:
ISO 2418 – Leather - Chemical determination of chromium content
Guides chemical testing of leather raw materials, complementing quality control efforts.ISO 4045 – Leather - Physical and mechanical tests
Provides standard methods to evaluate leather properties post trimming and tanning.ISO 105-X series – Leather - Colour fastness tests
Relevant for assessing dyed leather products derived from trimmed hides.ISO 17075 – Leather - Chemical determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP)
Ensures safe chemical levels in leather, relevant during processing stages following trimming.
Implementing ISO 2820:1974/Amd 1:1996 along with these related standards fosters a robust framework for managing leather raw materials, improving both quality and compliance in global leather industries.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
