Overview
ISO 21924-9:2020 - "Martial arts - Protective equipment for martial arts - Part 9: Additional requirements and test methods for Wushu Sanda head protectors" specifies terms, structure, classification, performance requirements and test methods for Wushu Sanda head protectors. It applies to protectors sewn from polyurethane (PU) synthetic leather, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) artificial leather, polyurethane foam padding and similar materials, and includes normative impact test methods (Annex A).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product scope and structure: Definitions of parts (main body, ear protector, back protector, locking strap, hook-and-loop fastener, top cover) and required dimensions for S, M, L, XL sizes.
- Materials: Approved outer fabrics and linings (PU, PVC, textiles) and polyurethane foam padding.
- Manufacturing and appearance:
- Stitching: continuous lines, 8–10 stitches per 30 mm, no missing or skipped stitches.
- Surface: smooth, symmetric, free of stains and defects; hook-and-loop/locking strap positioned and skewed to avoid injury.
- Safety and chemical limits:
- Formaldehyde: fabric ≤ 300 mg/kg; lining ≤ 75 mg/kg.
- Aromatic amines from azo dyes: fabric/lining ≤ 20 mg/kg.
- pH ranges: PU/PVC 3.5–9.5; textiles 4.0–8.5.
- Physical and mechanical properties:
- Tear strength: PU/PVC > 40 N; textiles > 10 N.
- Abrasion resistance: PU/PVC grade > 4.
- Seam strength (locking strap/fabric): > 140 N/cm.
- Hook-and-loop shear strength: > 7.5 N/cm; peel strength > 1.6 N/cm.
- Padding hardness: 8–10 HA; resilience > 30%; compression set ≤ 15%.
- Impact resistance (finished product): ≤ 1.8 kN with no break, tear or permanent deformation.
- Test methods: Measurement procedures, sewing/appearance inspection, and lab tests for formaldehyde and azo amines per referenced ISO methods (e.g., ISO 17226-1, ISO 14184-1, ISO 17234, ISO 14362 series). Annex A covers impact performance tests.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers and product designers - to design and produce compliant Wushu Sanda head protectors and set production tolerances.
- Quality control and testing laboratories - to verify material safety, mechanical strength and impact performance.
- Sport governing bodies and event organizers - to specify approved protective equipment for competitions.
- Importers, retailers and procurement teams - to evaluate product conformity for international trade.
- Safety regulators and consumer protection agencies - to reference limits for chemical and mechanical safety.
Related standards
ISO 21924-9 references many test-method standards for textiles, leather and foam (e.g., ISO 17226-1, ISO 14184-1, ISO 17234 series, ISO 2439). These provide the detailed laboratory methods for chemical and mechanical tests cited in this part.

Introduction
Wushu Sanda, an important component of Chinese Wushu (martial arts), is a sport of one-on-one
combat involving kicking, striking, wrestling, etc. As attacks to the head and main body are allowed in
combat, head protectors are adopted to protect the head and to reduce injuries.
Though Wushu Sanda head protectors are sold and used all over the world, they vary considerably in
quality. As no standard has been established to prescribe relevant requirements, the inconsistency in
production processes and quality inspections have become the main constraint on the development of
this product.
The establishment of this document provides a technical guideline for manufacturers and consumers,
and will help to standardize the production and quality control of Wushu Sanda head protectors to
further promote international trade and Wushu Sanda and to safeguard the interests of consumers.
