Overview
ISO 24259:2022 specifies requirements for steel strapping for packaging used to bundle, reinforce and secure metallic materials, glass, light industrial products and logistics loads. The standard covers classification, nominal dimensions, shape tolerances, mechanical properties, surface finishes, inspection and testing methods, marking, ordering information and logistics for steel strapping supplied for packaging applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification
- Tensile strength classes: Regular (RT), High (HT) and Super High (SHT).
- Surface finishes: Bright (B), Blue & Waxed (BW), Painted & Waxed / Painted (PW/P), and Zinc coated (Z); painted/zinc coating thickness ≥ 3 µm per side.
- Wound types: Ribbon (R) and Oscillated (O).
- Dimensions & tolerances
- Typical nominal widths: 12.7, 16, 19, 25.4, 31.75, 40, 50 mm (various thicknesses available).
- Tolerances: Thickness ±0.05 mm, Width ±0.13 mm.
- Recommended coil inside diameter: 406 mm ±2 mm (alternative diameters by agreement).
- Shape & quality
- Shape limits per 2 000 mm: Camber ≤ 10 mm, Flatness ≤ 24 mm, Twist ≤ 18°.
- Surface finish must be smooth and free of rust, kinks, burrs and severe defects; coatings uniform and complete.
- Mechanical & corrosion performance
- Tensile strength and elongation values are specified by classification and nominal thickness (see standard’s tables).
- Zinc-coated strapping must pass neutral salt spray requirements (no red rust within 24 h).
- Inspection & testing
- Dimensional checks with micrometers/calipers; coating thickness measured at specified points (≥3 mm from edges).
- Tensile testing per ISO 6892-1, corrosion testing per ISO 9227.
- Test unit concept: up to 30 t of strapping per test unit.
- Marking & ordering
- Minimum marking: manufacturer ID, ISO 24259 reference, dimensions, tensile class, finish, wound type, production date, lot number, net/gross weight.
- Ordering information should reference ISO 24259 and specify finish, wound type and dimensions.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 24259 is essential for:
- Steel strapping manufacturers and fabricators ensuring compliant product design and production.
- Packaging engineers and procurement teams specifying secure load restraint materials.
- Logistics, freight and warehousing operators who require consistent, tested strapping for bundling and transport.
- Quality inspectors and test laboratories performing dimensional, mechanical and corrosion assessments.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electro technical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electro
technical standardization.
