Overview
ISO 3822-1:1999/Amd 1:2008 is an amendment to the international standard for acoustics testing, specifically focusing on laboratory tests of noise emissions from appliances and equipment used in water supply installations. This amendment introduces guidelines on measurement uncertainty in the context of sound pressure level testing. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 43, Subcommittee SC 2 (Building Acoustics), the document aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of noise measurement methods used in water supply system components.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies that require precise noise emission data to ensure compliance with noise control regulations, improve product design, and reduce environmental noise pollution.
Key Topics
- Measurement Uncertainty: Defines principles for evaluating uncertainties in sound pressure level measurements related to water supply appliances.
- Statistical Approach: Recommends application of the type B evaluation method as described in ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 (the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement - GUM:1995).
- Standard Deviation of Reproducibility: Uses round robin test data to estimate the uncertainty, with typical standard deviation values provided for octave band frequencies relevant to noise emissions.
- Expanded Uncertainty: Specifies the expanded uncertainty for a 95% confidence interval (coverage factor k = 2) as twice the standard deviation of reproducibility, unless more specific laboratory data is available.
- Octave Band Frequencies: Provides detailed reproducibility data across key frequencies (125 Hz to 4,000 Hz) to help standardize noise emission results.
- Practical Repeatability Values: Establishes that the standard deviation of repeatability is approximately 0.5 dB, while reproducibility is about 1.5 dB for common water supply appliances.
Applications
- Noise Emission Testing: ISO 3822-1:1999/Amd 1:2008 is applied in acoustical laboratories performing controlled laboratory tests on faucets, valves, pumps, and other water supply equipment to quantify their noise output accurately.
- Product Development: Manufacturers utilize this standard to assess and reduce product noise emissions, improving customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance.
- Quality Control: Assists laboratories in maintaining consistent and reliable measurement procedures with documented uncertainty margins, ensuring test result validity.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports environmental and building acoustics regulators in setting noise limits and enforcing regulations related to plumbing and water supply installations.
- Scientific Research: Provides a foundation for acoustic researchers investigating noise propagation and mitigation in water supply systems.
Related Standards
- ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 (GUM:1995) - Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement: This guide underpins the uncertainty evaluation methodology outlined in ISO 3822-1:1999/Amd 1:2008.
- ISO 140-2 - Acoustics - Measurement of Sound Insulation in Buildings and Building Elements: This standard provides the framework used to derive the standard deviation of reproducibility from round robin test results referenced in ISO 3822-1:1999/Amd 1:2008.
- ISO 3822 (Part 2 and related parts) - Covers other aspects of acoustical testing for water supply installations and complements Part 1 by addressing additional measurement methods or equipment types.
- ISO 3741 to ISO 3746 - Series of standards on sound power and sound pressure level determination useful for comprehensive noise emission assessments alongside ISO 3822-1 evaluations.
By incorporating measurement uncertainty metrics into noise emission testing for water supply appliances, ISO 3822-1:1999/Amd 1:2008 ensures more accurate, reproducible, and trustworthy acoustic results. This improves product design, enhances compliance with noise regulations, and fosters better environmental noise management.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
