Overview

EN ISO 3822-1:1999/A1:2008 is the CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 3822‑1:1999 covering laboratory measurement procedures for noise emitted by appliances and equipment used in water supply installations. Amendment 1 (2008) adds guidance on measurement uncertainty, including informative Annex D with reproducibility and repeatability data and advice on expressing uncertainty in accordance with ISO/IEC Guide 98‑3 (GUM).

Keywords: acoustics, noise emission, water supply installations, measurement uncertainty, ISO 3822-1, appliance sound pressure level

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope of amendment: Adds Annex D to Part 1 (Method of measurement) specifically addressing how to evaluate and report measurement uncertainty for appliance sound pressure levels.
  • Uncertainty framework: Recommends following ISO/IEC Guide 98‑3 (GUM:1995). The annex states that, because sound pressure measurements are statistical in nature, the type B approach defined in the GUM should be used and, where available, laboratory-specific knowledge replaces default values.
  • Repeatability and reproducibility data:
    • Standard deviation of repeatability (s_r) for appliance sound pressure level L_ap: 0.5 dB.
    • Standard deviation of reproducibility (s_R) for a usual water‑supply appliance: 1.5 dB.
    • Reproducibility by octave band (s_R): 125 Hz = 1.5 dB; 250–4 000 Hz = 1.0 dB.
    • Note: s_R can be larger for appliances producing very low sound levels.
  • Expanded uncertainty: For 95% coverage (coverage factor k = 2), the amendment recommends taking the expanded measurement uncertainty as 2 · s_R, unless more specific laboratory data are available.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it:
    • Acoustic test laboratories performing standardized noise tests on taps, valves, pumps and other water‑supply fixtures.
    • Manufacturers designing or certifying plumbing fixtures and hydraulic equipment to demonstrate acoustic performance.
    • Product certifiers, regulatory bodies and consultants assessing compliance and reporting measurement uncertainty.
  • Practical uses:
    • Quantifying and reporting uncertainty when publishing appliance sound pressure levels.
    • Supporting product development decisions related to noise reduction.
    • Ensuring consistent test reporting across laboratories and jurisdictions (CEN adoption ensures consistency across many European national standards bodies).

Related standards

  • ISO 3822‑1:1999 (base standard - Method of measurement)
  • ISO/IEC Guide 98‑3:1995 (GUM - Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement)
  • ISO 140‑2 (used for determination of precision data in round‑robin tests)

This amendment helps labs and manufacturers produce comparable, defensible noise data for water‑supply appliances by standardizing how measurement uncertainty is estimated and reported.
