This document can also be applied to the printer component of any multifunctional device that has a digital input-printing path, including multi-function devices that contain printer components. This document is only intended for the measurement of toner cartridge yield. No other claims may be made from this testing regarding quality, reliability, etc. This document is not for use with printers whose minimum printable size is equal to or greater than A3 or for photo-only printers. Application of this document for yield measurement of toner replenishment systems (i.e. toner cartridge- and bottle-type systems where the toner reservoir is internal to the printing system and not user-replaceable) implies some procedural modifications specifically noted herein. This document is intended for equipment used in the office space and does not apply to production volume or large format printing machines where the major cost of ownership is not caused by the consumable yield measured in this document. This document is intended to be used to evaluate the durability of colour prints under environment and stress conditions assuming general office use, including transportation from the place of printing to where practically used. Permanence and durability in archival and storage environments are out of scope of this document and can be evaluated by the methods in ISO 11798. The physical durability attributes included are thermal and humidity blocking, water resistance, abrasion resistance and scratch resistance. All of these attributes are also applicable to a simplex print set comprising several sheets with colour images printed on one side of a substrate and no image on the other side.

This document is applicable to duplex prints comprising several sheets which are printed colour images on both surfaces of a substrate. “Within-page variation” and “sheet-to-sheet variation” are also applicable for a simplex print set comprising several sheets, which are printed colour images on one surface of a substrate and no image on the other surface. Prints with four primary colourants other than cyan, magenta, yellow and black are outside the scope of this document. Included are digital prints formed by using a multifunction or single function printer. When a duplex print set is evaluated, duplex printers which are capable to print images on both sides of substrate automatically are applicable, while simplex printers which require a manual arrangement of substrates between the front side and back side printing to form duplex prints are out of scope of this document. The printers of the maximum applicable substrate size of A4 or larger are suitable for the measurements. The geometric property attributes included are registration and magnification of a print set. Microscopic geometrical density variations, such as graininess, mottle and line raggedness, are outside the scope of this document. The sources of variations considered are locations in a page, print side in a sheet, print order of sheets in a print set, and variations among primary colours.

The image quality attributes included are colour reproduction, line quality, graininess and mottle. The sources of variation considered are locations in a page (within-page variation), printed side in a sheet (side-to-side variation), printed order of the sheet (sheet-to-sheet variation) and colours printed on the back side of evaluated patch (show-through variation). A duplex print set, comprising several sheets which are printed by multifunction or single function printer with colour images on both surfaces of a substrate, is a main application of the test methods to measure image quality variations in the set. Variations, such as within-page variation and sheet-to-sheet variation, are also applicable for a simplex print set comprising several sheets which are printed colour images on one surface of a substrate and no image on the other surface. Both duplex and simplex printers are applicable to form a print set. When image qualities of duplex prints are measured, duplex printers which are capable to print images on both sides of substrate automatically are applicable to form duplex prints. The purpose of this document is to provide a method to determine the ink cartridge yield of ink-containing cartridges (i.e. integrated ink cartridges and ink cartridges without integrated print heads) for colour photo printing with colour inkjet printers and multifunction devices that contain inkjet printer components. In the case where a cartridge set can be used in multiple printer models, only one yield test is performed as long as the difference between printer models does not impact yield. NOTE A cartridge supplier can choose to use more than one market identifier for a single physical cartridge. In this case only one yield test is required as long as there are no differences in the cartridges other than market identifiers. This document prescribes the following: - the test method that manufacturers, test laboratories, etc. use to determine ink cartridge yield; - the method for determination of declared cartridge yield values for photo printing from the test results; and - the appropriate method of describing the cartridge yield for photo printing in documentation supplied to the consumer by the manufacturer. This document is only intended for the determination of ink cartridge yield. No other claims can be made from this testing regarding quality, reliability, etc. This document can be used to determine the yield of any cartridge that is used during the printing of the photo test file defined in ISO/IEC 29103. This document is not for use with printers whose minimum printable size is equal to or greater than A3. This document is not intended to measure the yield of photo printing on paper size larger than 4" × 6", L or A6. In addition, this document is not for use with industrial printers or point of sale printers. It only applies to desktop printing systems.
