Overview

ISO 10284:1997 - "Cinematography - Graphical symbols - Description" specifies standardized graphical symbols intended for use on motion-picture equipment. The standard ensures consistent, internationally recognized symbols for cameras, projectors, sound and mechanical systems used in cinematography. It defines symbol grouping, references to related symbol standards, and requires symbol dimensions to conform to ISO 3461-1.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Symbols are intended specifically for motion-picture equipment; they support clear equipment labelling, operation and safety.
  • Dimensions: Symbol sizes and proportions shall conform to ISO 3461-1 (General principles for creation of graphical symbols - equipment).
  • Grouping: Symbols are organized into six functional groups for easy reference:
    • Group 1 - General application: On/Off, Stand-by, Start/Stop, Remote control, Manual/Automatic cycle, Timer.
    • Group 2 - Power-supply systems (electric drive): Direct/Alternating current, Battery check, AC/DC converter, Earth (ground), Fuse, Motor.
    • Group 3 - Optical and lighting systems: Lamp/illumination, Lens, Focusing, Brightness, Emulsion position (Type A/B).
    • Group 4 - Movement and mechanical systems: Wind/unwind (roll), Framing, Stop-frame, Marker, Coupling, Lubrication.
    • Group 5 - Sound engineering systems: Input/Output, Microphone, Amplifier, Tape recorder, Loudspeaker, Monitoring, Play-back/Recording.
    • Group 6 - Thermo-pneumo-hydro systems: Heating, Air impeller (fan/blower), Constant temperature, Level.
  • Normative references: Links to ISO and IEC symbol standards (e.g., ISO 3461-1, ISO 7000, ISO 8400, IEC 417) and applicable DIN documents are listed as part of the standard’s technical basis.
  • Multilingual referents: Equivalent French terms are provided under each referent.

Applications

  • Ensures consistent user interfaces and equipment labelling across cameras, projectors, viewfinders, light controllers, sound recorders and lab equipment.
  • Improves operator safety and reduces errors by standardizing power, mechanical and warning symbols.
  • Supports manufacturers and designers in producing compliant control panels, enclosures and documentation.
  • Useful for service technicians, film laboratory staff, location sound engineers, archivists and restoration specialists who rely on unambiguous equipment symbols.

Who should use this standard

  • Cinematography equipment manufacturers and component suppliers
  • UI/UX designers for film and broadcast hardware
  • Audio/video technicians, projectionists and service engineers
  • Standards bodies and regulatory authorities setting signage and safety rules

Related standards

  • ISO 3461-1 (symbol dimensions/principles)
  • ISO 7000 (graphical symbols index)
  • ISO 8400 (emulsion positions for 16 mm)
  • IEC 417 and other IEC/DIN symbol references

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collab-
orates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on
all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
