Introduction
Euodia fruit is known as wúzhūyú (吴茱萸) in Chinese. It is a medicinal herb which has been widely used as
functional food and crude drug to dissipate cold, relieve pain, downbear counterflow, stop vomiting, assist
yang and stop diarrhoea in Asian countries for thousands of years.
The products of Euodia fruit are sold all over the world. Euodia fruit has been recorded by the Chinese
pharmacopoeia, Hong Kong Chinese materia medica standards, the European pharmacopoeia, the Japanese
pharmacopoeia and the Korean pharmacopoeia. However, the requirements and test methods of Euodia fruit
in these national and regional standards are varied and can cause barriers in international trade.
Factors including producing areas, processing, packaging and storage conditions can affect the quality of
Euodia fruit. The quality of Euodia fruit in the market can be unstable. In addition, due to its demand in the
global market, trade in Euodia fruit can be complicated by adulteration and substitution issues.
As an important herb in traditional Chinese medicine, Euodia fruit is ranked the seventeenth in the priority
list of single herbal medicines for developing standards in ISO/TR 23975. Thus, it is essential to develop an
International Standard for Euodia fruit to maintain consistent quality of Euodia fruit, ensure the safe use of
this herb and promote international trade.
As national implementation can differ, national standards bodies are invited to modify the values given in
5.6 in their national standards. Examples of national and regional values are given in Annex C.

Introduction
Euodia fruit is the dried and nearly ripe fruit of Euodia (Evodia) rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth., Euodia (Evodia)
rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. var. officinalis (Dode) Huang or Euodia (Evodia) rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. var.
bodinieri (Dode) Huang (Tetradium ruticarpum (A. Juss.) T. G. Hartley) andEuodia fruit is known as wúzhūyú
(吴茱萸) in Chinese. It is a medicinal herb which has been widely used as functional food and crude drug to
dissipate cold, relieve pain, downbear counterflow, stop vomiting, assist yang and stop diarrheadiarrhoea in
Asian countries for thousands of years.
The products of Euodia fruit are sold all over the world. Euodia fruit has been recorded by the Chinese
pharmacopoeia, Hong Kong Chinese materia medica standards, the European pharmacopoeia, the Japanese
pharmacopoeia and the Korean pharmacopoeia. However, the requirements and test methods of Euodia fruit
in these national and regional standards are varied and maycan cause barriers in international trade.
Factors including producing areas, processing, packaging and storage conditions maycan affect the quality of
Euodia fruit. The quality of Euodia fruit in the market maycan be unstable. In addition, due to its demand in
the global market, trade in Euodia fruit maycan be complicated by adulteration, and substitution issues.
As an important herb in traditional Chinese medicine, Euodia fruit is ranked the seventeenth in the ISO/TR
23975: 2025 Traditional Chinese medicine — Prioritypriority list of single herbal medicines for developing
standards. in ISO/TR 23975. Thus, it is essential to develop the international standardan International
Standard for Euodia fruit to ensure the consistency in maintain consistent quality of Euodia fruit, which is
important inensure the safe use of this herb and also promote the international trade.
As national implementation maycan differ, national standards bodies are invited to modify the values given in
5.65.6 in their national standards. Examples of national and regional values are given in Annex CAnnex C.

It is applicable to Euodia fruit that areis sold and used as natural medicines in international trade, including

5 Quality and safety requirements and recommendations
5.1 General characteristics
The following requirements shall be met before sampling:.
a) a) Euodia fruit shall be clean and free from foreign matter;.
b) b) The presence of living insects, moulds and external contaminants which are visible to the
naked eye shall not be permitted.
5.2 Macroscopic characteristics
SpheroidalEuodia fruit is spheroidal or slightly flattened-pentagon spheroidal, 2 mm to 5 mm in diameter.
ExternallyIt is externally dark yellowish-green to brown, rough, with numerous spotted protrudings or
depressed oil dots. A pentagon-stellate cleft is present at the apex and a yellow-tomentose fruit stalk at the
base. Texture,The texture is hard and fragile. TransverseThe transverse section showingshows 5-locular
ovary, each locule possessing 1 yellowish seed. Odour,The odour is strong and aromatic;. The taste, is pungent
and bitter.
5.3 Microscopic characteristics
a) a) Transverse section, ( [see Figure 2 aFigure 2a):)]: 1 row epidermis cells of exocarp (1); the oil
chamber (2) is large, with a diameter of 45 µm to 460 µm, distributed in mesocarp (3); the vascular
bundles (4) are distributed near the endocarp (5); clusters of calcium oxalate (6) are distributed in
mesocarp parenchyma cells, especially near endocarp composed of 4- to 5 rows of oblong parenchyma
cells; sometimes stone cells (7) can be seen.
b) b) Powder, ( [see Figure 2 bFigure 2b):)]: brown; 1- to 6 celled non-glandular hairs (8), 140- µm
to 350 µm long, warts obvious, some lumina containing brownish-yellow to brownish-red contents;
glandular hairs (9) with a 7- to 14 celled head, elliptical, usually containing yellowish-brown contents,
and with a 2- to 5 celled stalk; clusters of calcium oxalate (6) frequently, 10 µm to 25 µm in diameter;
stone cells (7) subrounded or rectangular, 35 µm to 70 µ
