Overview
IEC 60335-2-110:2013/AMD1:2019 is an important international amendment issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the safety requirements for commercial microwave appliances with insertion or contacting applicators. This amendment updates Part 2-110 of the IEC 60335 series, which deals specifically with the particular safety standards applicable to commercial microwave ovens and related devices used in professional and industrial environments.
This standard amendment emphasizes enhanced safety markings, warnings, and construction features to prevent hazards associated with microwave energy, ensuring protection for operators and service personnel. It reflects the latest consensus of IEC Technical Committee 61, Subcommittee 61B, specialized in microwave appliance safety.
Key Topics
Safety Warnings and Markings
The amendment introduces new and updated instructions for appliance markings including:- Warning statements such as “Switch off and remove plug from mains before adjusting or cleaning”
- Symbols compliant with ISO 7000-0434A and IEC 60417-6167 for indicating non-ionizing radiation hazards and the need to keep clear of microwave energy.
- Requirements that safety signs be prominently displayed in yellow backgrounds with black lettering, with minimum font sizes specified (e.g., 5 mm height for warnings).
- Clear indication of restricted areas using symbols such as ISO 7010-P004 (no thoroughfare) and IEC 60417-6166 (caution for non-ionizing radiation).
Construction and Indication Devices
Construction requirements are updated to ensure that devices like lights, switches, and push-buttons that indicate danger or alarms are colored red for immediate recognition.Transitional Application Timeline
The committee recommends manufacturers and testing bodies allow a transitional period between 12 to 36 months after publication before fully adopting these updated requirements.References to Other Standards
The amendment mandates compliance with additional normative references:- ISO 3864-1 (Design principles for safety colors and signs)
- ISO 7010 (Registered safety signs)
Applications
IEC 60335-2-110:2013/AMD1:2019 is essential for manufacturers, testing labs, and compliance officers working with commercial microwaves used in professional kitchens, food processing, and industrial heating applications. Its implementation ensures:
- Enhanced operator safety by clearly communicating microwave hazards and safe handling practices.
- Standardized safety symbols and markings improving universal understanding and compliance.
- Alignment with up-to-date safety practices, reducing risks of microwave exposure accidents.
- Clear guidance for maintenance and cleaning procedures that safeguard personnel from electrical and microwave energy dangers.
This standard primarily targets commercial kitchens, food service providers, and companies utilizing microwave technologies for heating, cooking, or processing with insertion or contacting applicators.

- IEC 60335-1: General Requirements for Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances – Provides baseline safety requirements referenced by Part 2 standards.
- ISO 3864-1: Graphical safety symbols and color specifications applied in marking obligations under the amendment.
- ISO 7010: Standardized safety signs ensuring uniform communication of hazards.
- IEC 60417: Collection of graphical symbols for use on equipment, such as radiation hazard warnings included in this amendment.
Conclusion
IEC 60335-2-110:2013/AMD1:2019 amendment represents a vital update enhancing the safety framework for commercial microwave appliances with insertion or contacting applicators. By defining rigorous marking, construction, and instructional requirements, it supports safer operation, maintenance, and handling in professional environments. Manufacturers and regulators must integrate these provisions to comply with evolving international safety norms and protect users from microwave energy risks effectively.
