Overview
IEC 60626-1:2009 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines and sets out the general requirements for combined flexible materials used in electrical insulation. These materials consist of two or more different insulating components laminated together, such as plastic films and fibrous materials like papers or woven fabrics. Notably, this standard excludes mica paper as the primary component (covered under IEC 60371), although mica paper can be used as a complementary material.
This third edition revises previous definitions and updates the scope, particularly regarding the treatment of mica paper, and refreshes the list of materials in the standard to exclude obsolete materials and introduce modern ones.
Key Topics
Definitions and Terminology
The standard establishes clear terms for different types of combined insulating materials, including:- Full width material (production width, ~1m)
- Slit material or tape (cut from full width)
- Duplex (two-layer laminate)
- Triplex (three-layer laminate)
- Quadruplex (four-layer laminate)
Material Designation and Codification
Materials are identified using a system of code letters that indicate the form and nature of the main components, such as films (F), paper (P), adhesives (A), and various plastic or fibrous components. For example, "P-C/F-PET" indicates cellulose paper laminated with polyethylene terephthalate film. Additional specifications like impregnated or embossed can be appended for clarity.General Requirements
- Delivery formats: sheets or rolls.
- Consistency and uniformity in properties throughout the entire length or sheet.
- Surface quality requirements to minimize defects such as bubbles, pinholes, creases.
- Material must be free from conductive particles and impurities.
- Roll materials must unroll without damage; sheets should minimize warp.
Dimensions and Tolerances
Thickness tolerances refer to IEC 60626-3. Other dimensional specifications such as width and length are subject to supplier-purchaser agreement.Joining and Packaging
The standard requires agreements on joining frequency and methods for materials supplied in roll form. Packaging should protect the materials during transport, handling, and storage, with clear marking of essential information including type designation, dimensions, roll or sheet quantities, thickness, manufacture date, and join details.Normative References
IEC 60626-1 refers to multiple complementary standards that specify individual base materials used in laminated insulation products, such as:- IEC 60554 series for cellulosic paper.
- IEC 60674 and IEC 60819 series for plastic films, glass paper, aramid papers.
Applications
IEC 60626-1:2009 is critical for industries where high-performance electrical insulation is essential. Typical applications include:
- Transformers and rotating electrical machines where flexible insulation is layered for durability and electrical safety.
- Electrical apparatus manufacturing requiring laminates that can withstand mechanical stress and electrical fields.
- Development of new insulating materials for enhanced thermal and electrical properties.
- Quality assurance in the production and supply chain of insulation materials.
- Compatibility studies involving combined materials in multilayer insulation systems.
The standard provides a common language and requirement baseline that ensures materials meet consistent performance criteria, facilitating international trade and safety in electrical equipment.
Related Standards
IEC 60626-1 works in conjunction with these standards to fully address flexible electrical insulation materials:

INTRODUCTION
This International standard is one of a series which deals with combined flexible materials
consisting of two or more different insulating materials laminated together. The components of
the combined materials are plastic films and/or fibrous materials such as papers, woven or
non-woven fabrics, impregnated or not impregnated.
This series consist of three parts describing:
Part 1: Definitions and general requirements (IEC 60626-1)
Part 2: Methods of test (IEC 60626-2)
Part 3: Specifications for individual materials (IEC 60626-3)

COMBINED FLEXIBLE MATERIALS
FOR ELECTRICAL INSULATION –
Part 1: Definitions and general requirements
1 Scope
This part of IEC 60626 contains the definitions related to and the general requirements to be
fulfilled by combined flexible materials for electrical insulation. This standard does not include
mica paper, as primary component, covered by IEC 60371, but mica paper may be used as
complementary material.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance.
However, the selection of material by a user for a specific application should be based on the
actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on
this specification alone.
SAFETY WARNING
It is the responsibility of the user of the methods contained or referred to in this document to
ensure that they are used in a safe manner.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
NOTE The list of normative references is extensive because, in order to obtain a combination of two or more
materials for electrical insulation, it is necessary that those base materials (paper, film, etc) shall conform to the
requirements set forth, in the appropriate specification of the base material alone, for that purpose. This rule shall
be applied also in the development of new possible combinations; to this end, specifications of materials not
actually used, but referenced, may be eligible for future developments.
