Overview
IEC 60335-2-68:2012/AMD1:2016 is an important amendment to the international standard focusing on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically addressing spray extraction machines for commercial use. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment enhances the existing safety framework by updating technical requirements and clarifying test procedures. It applies to electrically motor-operated cleaning appliances designed for commercial environments, ensuring these machines meet stringent safety criteria during operation.
This amendment provides practical modifications to Part 2-68 of IEC 60335, reinforcing safety, marking, and testing protocols essential to manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies. Complying with these updated standards helps improve product reliability, user safety, and market acceptance of commercial spray extraction machines.
Key Topics
- Scope Extension: Addition of IEC 62841 references to the scope, linking hand-held and transportable electrical motor-operated tools safety standards with the spray extraction machines domain.
- Marking and Instructions: Updates include revisions on symbols used, date corrections for referenced standards such as IEC 60417, and new provisions for appliances powered by rechargeable batteries recharged in the device versus those with non-rechargeable or external charging batteries.
- Test Liquids Exclusion: Specific liquids like hydraulic oil, coolant, and various fuels (diesel, gasoline, LPG) are excluded from certain safety performance tests, ensuring practical relevance of testing without compromising safety.
- Liquid Container Test: Guidelines are provided for testing the liquid container filled with saline solution containing specified proportions of sodium chloride and rinsing agent with detailed composition for consistent and reproducible test outcomes.
- Battery-Powered Appliances Annexes: New normative annexes B and S detail particular requirements for battery-powered machines - distinguishing between rechargeable batteries charged within the appliance and non-rechargeable or externally charged batteries.
- Terminology and Editorial Revisions: Language clarifications improve accuracy in safety criteria, including revised wording for abnormal operation and correction of typographical issues.
- Bibliography Update: Inclusion of IEC 62841 standard as a reference strengthens the interoperability and cross-application of safety terms and protocols.
Applications
IEC 60335-2-68:2012/AMD1:2016 applies primarily to:
- Manufacturers of Commercial Spray Extraction Machines: Assists in designing and engineering electrical cleaning appliances that comply with globally accepted safety requirements.
- Testing and Certification Bodies: Provides detailed testing methodologies for verification of compliance, including material exclusions and liquid container test protocols.
- Safety Inspectors and Regulators: Offers updated safety criteria and marking requirements to enforce product safety in commercial cleaning equipment markets.
- Product Developers: Guides integration of battery-powered features with distinctions on rechargeable versus non-rechargeable battery use, ensuring clear safety marking and operational guidelines.
- International Trade and Market Access: Harmonizes safety standards internationally, enabling smoother market entry for compliant commercial cleaning machines.
This amendment supports real-world commercial cleaning applications by ensuring machines are safe when exposed to operational stresses and handling specific cleaning fluids.
Related Standards
- IEC 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances; foundational base for Part 2-68 amendments.
- IEC 62841: Safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery; referenced for scope broadening and standard harmonization.
- IEC 60417: Graphical symbols for use on equipment; updated reference dates ensure correct application of safety symbols.
- ISO 7000: Collection of graphical symbols for use on equipment; alternative symbols recommended for marking instructions.
- Additional IEC Publications: Included in the bibliography and further reading to assist implementation and understanding of safety requirements for electrotechnical devices.
Conclusion
The IEC 60335-2-68:2012/AMD1:2016 amendment is a crucial update that reinforces safety, testing, and marking requirements for commercial spray extraction machines. It provides practical and detailed guidance for manufacturers and safety professionals to ensure compliance with internationally recognized safety standards. By bridging related standards and clarifying safety testing protocols, it supports safer design, manufacturing, and usage in commercial cleaning applications globally.
