(Main)Printed electronics - Part 201-2: Materials - Substrates - Measurement methods for properties of stretchable substrates
Printed electronics - Part 201-2: Materials - Substrates - Measurement methods for properties of stretchable substrates
IEC 62899-201-2:2021(E) defines measurement methods for the properties of stretchable substrates, in order to use evaluating stretchable functional layers (conductive, semiconducting, and insulating) formed by printing technologies. If the same types of materials as the substrates are used for the cover lay film, they are also subjected to the measurement defined in this document.
Stretchable substrates handled by this document apply to substrates subjected to repeated bending with wiring elements demanding a high level of performance, such as fabric integrated wearable devices or skin patchable devices.
This document does not define the required characteristics of the stretchable substrate. It provides test methods to characterize (pre-qualify) the substrates that are intended to be used for printing conductors and insulators for the purposes of manufacturing stretchable layers or structures.

Overview
IEC 62899-201-2:2021 - Printed electronics - Part 201-2: Materials - Substrates - Measurement methods for properties of stretchable substrates - defines standardized test methods to characterize stretchable substrates used in printed electronics. The standard provides measurement procedures (not performance requirements) to pre‑qualify substrates and, when applicable, cover‑lay films made of the same materials. It targets substrates used in high‑performance wiring subjected to repeated bending such as fabric‑integrated wearables and skin‑patchable devices.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose
- Measurement methods for stretchable substrates to evaluate printed conductive, semiconducting and insulating layers.
- Applies to monolithic elastic polymer films/sheets, fabrics (woven, knitted, nonwoven), composite structures and resin‑coated fabrics.
- Measured properties
- Dimensions: width and length (ISO 22198).
- Thickness: measured per ISO 5084.
- Mass per unit area (basis weight): for fabrics (ISO 3801).
- Elongation at break / tensile properties: strip method for fabrics (ISO 13934-1); coated fabrics and polymer films per IEC 62899-201.
- Electrical properties: volume resistance, surface resistance (referencing IEC 62631-3-1 and IEC 62631-3-2) and electric strength (IEC 60243-1).
- Specimen preparation
- Conditioning and preparation are aligned with IEC 62899-201; specimens should be tension‑free during electrical and dimensional tests (except tensile tests).
- Logistics
- Guidance on storage, packing, marking and shipment of substrate materials is included.
Applications and users
- Who uses this standard
- Printed electronics manufacturers and process engineers validating substrate compatibility for printed conductors and insulators.
- Material suppliers specifying stretchable films, fabrics or composite substrates.
- Product designers of wearables, e‑textiles, skin‑patch sensors and other flexible/stretchable devices requiring reliable printed wiring.
- Test laboratories and quality assurance teams performing pre‑qualification and comparative testing.
- Practical value
- Enables consistent, reproducible characterization of stretchable substrates to support material selection, process development and reliability assessment for stretchable printed electronic layers.
Related standards

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.

assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
