Overview
EN 62328-1:2005 (CLC adoption of IEC 62328-1:2005) defines the general description and architecture for an interchangeable volume/file structure used to exchange multimedia data between home servers and broadcasting receivers. The standard specifies the scope, references, terms, abbreviations and notation, and sets out requirements, design considerations and a content architecture for storing and exchanging an AV stream plus multiple associated objects (programme metadata, thumbnails, indexes, licenses, etc.). It targets interoperable recording formats that support removable media (e.g., optical discs using UDF) and secure playback across different receivers.
Key Topics
- Volume and file structure: Requirements for organizing recorded broadcast data so media can be interchanged and read by different compliant receivers.
- AV stream handling: Definition of the AV stream (MainTS in PROGxxxx.PIF) and how associated objects are synchronized with audio/video content.
- Programme references (PGR) and PGR groups (PGRG): Mechanisms to reference and group portions of AV streams for program-level access and editing.
- Recording models: Support for digital and analogue recording models and the TV recording format (TVRS) concept.
- Content architecture elements: Index tables, access/unit/allocation/time unit tables, hierarchical pointers and thumbnail structures to facilitate playback, fast scan and partial playback.
- Security and licensing: Concepts for a security module, license relationships and encrypted AV streams to support conditional access systems (CAS) and copy control information (CCI).
- Design considerations: Interaction with country-specific CAS, broadcasting-system-specific recording structures and requirements for compatibility across receivers.
Applications
EN 62328-1 is practical for:
- Designing DVRs, digital TV recorders, and multimedia home servers that store broadcast content on removable media.
- Implementing interoperable recording formats so a programme recorded on one receiver can be played by another while enforcing content protection.
- Creating file-system and metadata layouts that enable editing, indexing and selective playback of broadcast programmes.
- Integrating with conditional access systems (CAS) and secure UDF-based removable media solutions for protected content distribution.
Who uses this standard
- Consumer electronics manufacturers (set-top boxes, PVR/DVR vendors)
- Firmware and middleware developers for TV/broadcast receivers
- System integrators building home server and media-distribution solutions
- Broadcasters and service providers defining content delivery and protection workflows
- Standards bodies and test labs validating interoperability

INTRODUCTION Broadcast data in a transport stream can contain multiple associated objects. When that data is distributed on interchangeable storage media, for example, optical disks, the associated objects should be synchronized. Open distribution of the media requires that the data be adapted to a standardized volume and file structure, which should conform to the existing basic volume and file structure.
