Overview
EN 61067-1:1997 is a European standard specifying requirements for glass and glass polyester fibre woven tapes. This standard, prepared by the Comité Européen de Normalisation Electrotechnique (CLC) and aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61067-1:1991, sets definitions, classifications, and general requirements for loomstate continuous filament tapes woven from glass fibres or a combination of glass and polyester fibres. It covers nominal tape sizes with widths ranging from 10 mm to 50 mm and thicknesses between 0.05 mm and 0.40 mm.
This specification is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of glass fibre tapes used predominantly in electrical insulation and industrial applications requiring high-performance woven tapes.
Key Topics
Scope and Materials:
EN 61067-1 defines woven tapes made on both conventional shuttle looms and shuttleless looms. The tapes use continuous filament glass fibres (commonly E-glass) with a maximum of 1% alkali content and polyester (PETP) yarns that are heat set.Definitions and Terminology:
The standard clarifies important terms related to woven tapes, including pick (weft threads), end (warp thread), size (gelatinous film-forming substance applied pre-weaving), locking thread, shuttleless looms, plain weave, and heat set yarn.Classification:
Tapes are classified into three types:- Type 1: Woven on shuttle looms using glass fibres for both warp and weft.
- Type 2: Woven on shuttleless looms using glass fibres in both warp and weft.
- Type 3: Woven on shuttleless looms with glass fibres in warp and polyester fibres in weft.
Each tape is identified by nominal thickness (in hundredths of a millimeter) followed by a type and weave construction number, facilitating proper selection depending on application requirements.
General Requirements:
The standard specifies physical construction elements such as uniform plain weave for Type 1 tapes and an interlocked pick at selvedges for Types 2 and 3 to prevent unravelling. Thickness tolerances between selvedges, width specifications, and the use of coloured threads for tape identification are detailed according to IEC colour codes.Roll and Packaging Standards:
Tapes must be wound on specified core sizes with controlled tension to avoid deformation. The standard also limits the number and length of joins in tape rolls to maintain product integrity and ease of handling.Marking and Identification:
Marking requirements include standard number, tape type and designation, nominal thickness, width, roll length, and roll count in packages. This ensures traceability and compliance with the specifications.
Applications
EN 61067-1:1997 glass and glass polyester fibre woven tapes are widely used in:
Electrical Insulation: Their high mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and thermal resistance make these tapes ideal for insulating components in electrical engineering, such as cables, transformers, and electrical motors.
Composite Materials: Due to their reinforcement capabilities, these tapes contribute to performance improvement in composite manufacturing processes.
Industrial Textiles: The tapes serve as durable, heat-resistant fabrics useful in various industrial applications requiring robust woven reinforcement materials.
Varnish Impregnation: The controlled weave tightness and stable dimensions facilitate effective impregnation with electrical varnishes or resins, essential for enhanced dielectric properties.
Related Standards
IEC 61067-2: Methods of test for glass and glass polyester fibre woven tapes – details the testing procedures to verify the properties defined in Part 1.
IEC 61067-3: Specifications for individual types of glass and glass polyester fibre woven tapes – outlines detailed construction and performance criteria for each tape type.
IEC 304: Standard colours for insulation for low-frequency cables and wires – referenced for the colour coding of glass warp threads used in tape identification.
ISO and National Equivalents: Similar international standards and national adoptions ensure consistency and compatibility in production and application worldwide.
By adhering to EN 61067-1:1997, manufacturers and end-users benefit from standardized quality, reliable performance, and clear classification of glass and glass polyester fibre woven tapes critical in electrical insulation and industrial fabric applications. This ensures product consistency, traceability, and conformity with international best practices.
