Overview
EN 61120-1:1993 (IEC 61120-1:1991) defines the general requirements for professional digital audio tape recorder (DATR) reel‑to‑reel systems using 6.3 mm magnetic tape and stationary heads. The standard targets stereophonic digital audio recording and establishes the mechanical and electrical characteristics needed to ensure interchangeability of recorded programme material among professional industries.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Recording format scope: Applies to two complementary formats (Parts 2 and 3 describe formats A and B) that are intended to be usable in switchable operation under Part 1.
- Digital encoding
- Sampling frequency: 48 kHz with accuracy ±50 ppm.
- Sampling timing: It is recommended that both channels be sampled simultaneously.
- Quantization: 16‑bit uniform quantization, 2's complement code, MSB leading.
- Tape transport
- Tape speeds: Nominal 38.1 cm/s (speed I) and 19.05 cm/s (speed II) with a tolerance of ±0.2%.
- Tape winding: Magnetic coating faces the centre of the reel.
- Track allocation and assignment
- Multi‑track layout on 6.3 mm tape including main digital audio tracks and four sub‑tracks for time code, auxiliary data, and cue channels.
- Clear designation of sub‑tracks (sub‑track 1..4) and track assignment conventions for format A and B.
- Auxiliary channels
- Time code (sub‑track 1): Longitudinal time code according to IEC 461, recorded by direct recording.
- Aux data (sub‑track 2): User info (format A) or reference track (format B), recorded by direct recording.
- Cue channels (sub‑tracks 3 & 4): PWM‑modulated cue audio (format A) or analogue/PWM and/or data (format B).
- Emphasis: Use not recommended; if pre‑emphasis is applied it must be identified on tape and conform to a first‑order pre‑emphasis characteristic (specified in the document).
- Identification: Format identification is carried in unit frames and an unassigned address bit in the time/control code (per IEC 461).
Applications and users
- Relevant to broadcast studios, audio production houses, archival facilities, equipment manufacturers and integrators working with professional reel‑to‑reel digital audio systems.
- Used to guarantee media interchangeability, consistent audio quality, and compatibility of time code and auxiliary data across manufacturers and facilities.

DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE RECORDER REEL TO REEL SYSTEM,
USING 6,3 mm MAGNETIC TAPE,
FOR PROFESSIONAL USE
Part 1: General requirements
1 Scope
This part of IEC 1120 applies to stereophonic digital audio recording on 6,3 mm wide tape
with stationary heads for professional use. It defines the mechanical and electrical charac-
teristics necessary to ensure the interchangeability of programme recorded digital audio
signal on magnetic tape amongst professional industries.
This standard is presented in three pa rts. Parts 2 and 3 describe two formats usable within
part 1. It is practical to have switchable operation between these two formats. Conse-
quently it is logical to include both in one standard.
