(Main)Domestic and similar electronic equipment interconnection requirements: AV.link - Part 2-1: Signal quality matching and automatic selection of source devices
Domestic and similar electronic equipment interconnection requirements: AV.link - Part 2-1: Signal quality matching and automatic selection of source devices
This standard specifies an extension (with the possibility to start with only two devices as a point-to-point interconnection (only a Display unit combined with a low end VTR) and than building it up) towards a chain configuration (serial interconnection of devices) with respect to the existing CENELEC standard EN 50049-1 which specifies only the characteristics of the point-to-point interconnection system for audiovisual equipment. This standard defines the interconnection characteristics of peritelevision devices which are configured in the chain principle. This standard makes use of a control signal at contact 10 which gives the possibility for automatic source de-selection and quality matching of AV-signals. This standard describes the AVC-signals in line with EN 50049-1. This standard gives system and device oriented requirements which have to be fulfilled if use is made of the logo related to this standard to ensure the customer a certain signal quality is achieved. The AV.link logo is defined in EN 50157-1. This standard gives the possibility to have a bi-directional interconnection of Y/C signals. This standard gives the possibility to have a bi-directional control of the aspect ratio of 16:9 and 4:3

Overview
EN 50157-2-1:1998 (CLC) defines extensions to the AV.link interconnection system for domestic and similar electronic equipment, focusing on signal quality matching and automatic selection of source devices. Building on the point-to-point characteristics in EN 50049-1, this part enables a chain (serial) configuration of peritelevision devices and specifies system- and device-level requirements for reliable AV.link operation and use of the AV.link logo.
Key topics and requirements
- Chain configuration (serial interconnection): Allows devices to be interconnected in a chain (not just point-to-point), starting from a minimal point-to-point pairing (e.g., Display + low-end VTR) and scaling to multi-device chains.
- Control signal (contact 10): Defines use of a control line for automatic source de-selection and signal quality matching between devices - enabling devices to negotiate and select the optimal AV source automatically.
- AVC signal compatibility: Describes AVC (audio/video control) signal behaviour consistent with EN 50049-1 to ensure backward compatibility with existing point-to-point specifications.
- Bi-directional Y/C interconnection: Provides for two-way transmission of Y/C (luminance/chrominance) signals between devices when supported.
- Aspect ratio control: Supports bi-directional control for display aspect ratios 16:9 and 4:3, allowing source and display devices to coordinate presentation format.
- Logo and quality assurance: Specifies system and device requirements that manufacturers must meet if claiming conformance with the AV.link logo; the logo specification is defined in EN 50157-1.
Practical applications
- Consumer AV equipment interoperability in home entertainment systems
- Serially connected peritelevision device chains (e.g., set-top boxes, VTRs, displays)
- Automated source switching in AV racks, media centers, and integrated living-room systems
- Ensuring consistent Y/C signal handling and aspect-ratio coordination between legacy and modern devices
- Product certification and marketing using the AV.link logo to signal a guaranteed level of signal quality and automatic control features
Who should use this standard
- Consumer electronics manufacturers (TVs, VTRs, set-top boxes)
- AV system integrators and designers implementing chained device topologies
- Certification bodies and compliance engineers verifying AV.link logo claims
- Firmware and hardware designers implementing control-signal logic (contact 10) and aspect-ratio handling
