Overview
EN 61543:1995/A2:2006 (CLC) is the European adoption of IEC 61543:1995 with Amendment 2 (2005). It specifies electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for residual current‑operated protective devices (RCDs) intended for household and similar use. Amendment A2 adds explicit tests and performance criteria for conducted common‑mode disturbances in the frequency range below 150 kHz, extending the EMC test requirements for RCDs used in low‑voltage installations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: EMC performance and immunity requirements for RCDs for household and similar applications.
- New disturbance category (T2.6): Conducted common‑mode disturbances in the frequency range below 150 kHz (direct connection to the low‑voltage mains).
- Test standards referenced: IEC 61000‑4‑16 is used as the basic test reference for conducted HF common‑mode currents; HF generator characteristics must comply with that standard.
- Test levels and RCD sensitivity:
- Two test severity levels defined: Level 2 (for RCDs with I < 30 mA) and Level 3 (for I ≥ 30 mA).
- Table 5a (added by A2) defines RMS current values by frequency band (1 kHz–1.5 kHz, 1.5 kHz–15 kHz, 15 kHz–150 kHz) and RCD sensitivity.
- Common‑mode impedance assumed: 150 Ω (used to derive current levels).
- Test procedure highlights:
- Swept‑frequency immunity test at 0.3 × rated residual current (0.3 I) from 1 kHz to 150 kHz - device shall not trip.
- Tripping verification at 1.25 × rated residual current (1.25 I) performed at five randomly selected frequencies - device must trip.
- Tests are typically single‑phase on one pole, three samples. Non‑compliance requires retest on additional samples.
- Test circuit example includes an isolation transformer, HF current generator and appropriate coupling per Figure 1 in the amendment.
- Regulatory note: The amendment was approved by CENELEC and intended for national adoption by members.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of RCDs and household protection devices - to design products that meet EMC immunity requirements.
- EMC and safety test laboratories - to implement the specified HF common‑mode test setups and acceptance criteria.
- Certification and conformity assessment bodies - to validate compliance with EN/IEC requirements for market access in Europe.
- Electrical design engineers, installers, and regulators - to understand device limitations and ensure reliable operation of RCDs in environments with HF common‑mode disturbances.
Related standards
- IEC 61543 (base standard) - electromagnetic compatibility for RCDs.
- IEC 61000‑4‑16 - basic standard for conducted HF common‑mode immunity testing referenced by EN 61543/A2.
