Overview

The EN ISO 24808:2024/A11:2024 is an important European standard that addresses the requirements for rebreather instructor training within the framework of recreational diving services. Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this amendment modifies the existing EN ISO 24808:2024 to enhance and specify the training criteria for instructors who teach rebreather diving techniques.

This latest amendment, effective November 1, 2024, aims to harmonize instructor qualifications across CEN member countries, ensuring safety, quality, and consistency in rebreather diving education. It also reflects current best practices in training, taking into account technical evolutions in rebreather equipment and diving pedagogy.

Key Topics

The standard encompasses critical aspects including:

  • Instructor Competency Requirements: Defining the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience for rebreather dive instructors to effectively train divers in the use of closed-circuit rebreather systems.
  • Training Curriculum Structure: Outlining the mandatory components and progression of instructor training programs, including theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Safety Protocols: Emphasizing safety management specific to rebreather diving, including risk assessment, emergency procedures, and incident management during training.
  • Certification Processes: Detailing the assessment criteria and certification mechanisms that qualify individuals as certified rebreather instructors.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Deviations: Highlighting national-specific deviations (e.g., French national regulations) that may affect the full application of the standard in some countries, and guidance on compliance within different legal frameworks.

Applications

The EN ISO 24808:2024/A11 standard benefits multiple stakeholders in the recreational diving sector:

  • Diving Schools and Training Centers: Enables institutions to align their instructor training courses with internationally recognized quality standards, promoting student safety and program excellence.
  • Dive Instructors and Professionals: Provides a clear roadmap for instructors seeking certification or recertification in rebreather training, elevating professional skills and career development.
  • Consumers and Divers: Assures recreational divers that instructors have met rigorous training criteria, enhancing their confidence in safe and effective instruction when learning rebreather diving techniques.
  • Regulatory Bodies: Supports the implementation of harmonized training standards to regulate and oversee recreational diving instruction, facilitating cross-border recognition of diving certifications.
  • Equipment Manufacturers: Provides feedback frameworks for manufacturers of rebreather systems to understand instructor training requirements and improve their user-support materials.

Related Standards

The amendment to EN ISO 24808:2024 interfaces closely with several related standards within the recreational diving and tourism service sector, including:

  • ISO 24806: Recreational diving services - Requirements for rebreather diving training - Decompression diving to 60 meters
  • ISO 24807: Recreational diving services - Requirements for rebreather diver training - Decompression diving to 100 meters

These complementary standards cover broader diver training requirements and decompression practices, which collectively contribute to a comprehensive framework for diver education and safety.

Practical Benefits

By adhering to the EN ISO 24808:2024/A11 requirements, diving service providers and instructors can:

  • Enhance instructor training quality, ensuring adherence to the latest safety and competency criteria for rebreather use.
  • Achieve better alignment with European harmonized standards facilitating international recognition of instructor qualifications.
  • Improve diver safety through consistent, standardized training methods reducing the risk of accidents related to rebreather diving.
  • Address national regulatory variations effectively, ensuring compliance in diverse legal environments.

This amendment to EN ISO 24808 is a vital resource for professional development and operational excellence in the recreational diving industry, particularly in the specialized field of rebreather instruction. It embodies CEN's commitment to consumer safety, service quality, and international standardization in leisure and tourism sectors.
