Overview

EN 14182:2002 is a European Standard developed by CEN that provides a comprehensive glossary of basic terms and definitions related to packaging. This standard is essential for harmonizing terminology across the packaging industry, facilitating consistent communication between manufacturers, regulators, and other stakeholders. It aligns with the terminology used in the European Community Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC), ensuring clarity in regulatory compliance and environmental practices.

The standard includes a core list of packaging terms, supplements these with definitions from the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, and offers multilingual equivalent terms in English, French, and German. EN 14182:2002 serves as a foundational reference for all packaging-related standards and applications across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Packaging Terminology
Defines fundamental terms such as packaging, packaging chain, unit load, barrier, closure, laminate, and cushioning, ensuring uniform use of language in packaging design, production, and regulation.

  • Packaging Categories
    Clarifies different types of packaging:

    • Sales (Primary) Packaging - Packaging intended for the final consumer.
    • Grouped (Secondary) Packaging - Packaging that groups primary packages, often used for transport or display.
    • Transport (Tertiary) Packaging - Packaging designed for handling and protection during transport but not including transport containers.
  • Packaging Waste and Management
Includes terms defining packaging waste, prevention, reuse, recovery, recycling, energy recovery, organic recycling, and disposal, reflecting the environmental focus of packaging regulations.

  • Multilingual Equivalents
Annex B provides a cross-reference of equivalent terms in English, French, and German to reduce ambiguity and improve understanding in multinational contexts.

  • Regulatory Alignment
Integrates definitions from the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC) and the Commission Decision on packaging material identification, aligning terminology with European legislation.

Applications

EN 14182:2002 is invaluable for a range of practical uses within the packaging industry and regulatory environment:

  • Standardization of Packaging Language
Manufacturers, designers, and distributors use these definitions to ensure consistency in documentation, product specifications, and communication.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Assists companies and regulators in interpreting and applying the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, particularly for packaging design, waste management, and sustainability initiatives.

  • Environmental Management
Supports waste reduction strategies by providing clear terminology on prevention, reuse, recycling, and energy recovery of packaging materials.

  • Cross-border Trade and Collaboration
Facilitates cooperation within the European market by providing multilingual terms and reducing misunderstandings arising from language differences.

  • Training and Education
Useful for educating new entrants to the packaging sector or environmental management professionals on essential packaging concepts in line with European standards.

Related Standards

  • European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC
The legal framework regulating packaging and packaging waste management across EU member states.

  • Commission Decision of 28 January 1997
Establishes the system for identifying packaging materials as referenced in EN 14182.
