It is essential for professionals dealing with packaging processes, materials, waste management, and compliance within the European Union.
The standard also includes key terminology defined in the European Community Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC), and provides multilingual equivalents in English, French, and German to facilitate cross-border understanding and collaboration.
Key Topics
- Basic packaging terms: Definitions of fundamental terms such as packaging, packaging chain, unit load, module, modular coordination, barrier, and laminate.
- Directive-defined terminology: Twelve key packaging and packaging waste terms aligned with EU legislation, including packaging, packaging waste, recycling, recovery, and disposal.
- Material identification: Inclusion of terminology concerning the identification and classification of packaging materials, aligned with the European Commission’s identification system.
- Multilingual vocabulary: Annex B provides equivalent terms in the three official CEN languages, supporting international communication and standardization.
Applications
EN 14182:2002 is highly valuable for a wide range of practical applications:
- Packaging development and manufacturing: Clear terminology ensures accurate communication across design, engineering, production, and quality assurance teams.
- Compliance and regulatory affairs: The standard supports alignment with the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, essential for legal compliance and reporting.
- Waste management and recycling operations: Standardized definitions for terms such as “recycling,” “recovery,” and “energy recovery” facilitate consistent interpretation and implementation of sustainable packaging strategies.
- Supply chain and distribution: Use of harmonized terms such as “unit load” and “packaging chain” improves operational efficiency and reduces misunderstandings in logistics.
- Translation and documentation: The multilingual glossary in Annex B is especially helpful for companies operating in different European countries, reducing translation errors and fostering mutual understanding.
