Overview

EN 1848-2:2001 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies test methods for determining the length, width, straightness, and flatness of flexible plastic and rubber sheets used for roof waterproofing. These thermoplastic and elastomeric sheets are supplied in rolls and are critical components in roofing systems to ensure durability and effective waterproofing.

This standard provides standardized procedures for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and testing institutions to assess these physical dimensions and characteristics before the sheets are installed. Accurate measurement of these properties is essential for product conformity, installation performance, and compliance with building regulations.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Focuses exclusively on thermoplastic and elastomeric sheets for roof waterproofing, detailing test methods applied to uninstalled, rolled sheets, not on installed membrane systems.

  • Definitions

    • Length: Dimension along the manufacturing direction of the roll
    • Width: Dimension perpendicular to the manufacturing direction
    • Straightness: Deviation of the roll's longitudinal edge from a straight line
    • Flatness: Deviation of the sheet’s surface from a flat plane when unrolled
  • Sampling
Sampling is conducted in accordance with EN 13416 to ensure representative and consistent sample selection.

  • Measurement Methods

    • Length is measured by unrolling the sheet on a flat surface at controlled temperature (23 ± 5°C), marking segments with precision up to ±5 mm, or by approved mechanical/electromechanical devices.
    • Width is measured at intervals along the roll, perpendicular to the length, with accuracy to 1 mm.
    • Straightness and flatness are measured by placing the material on a flat surface at specified temperature, determining maximum deviations using appropriate measuring tools.
  • Reporting
The standard requires detailed and clear test reports including reference to EN 1848-2, product identification, measurement values for length, width, straightness, flatness, any deviations or peculiarities observed, and testing date.

Applications

EN 1848-2:2001 is instrumental across various phases in the construction and manufacturing industry:

  • Quality Control in Manufacturing
Ensures that plastic and rubber sheets meet dimensional specifications to avoid installation issues.

  • Supplier and Product Certification
Helps suppliers document compliance with European waterproofing standards, facilitating market access and customer trust.

  • Contractor and Installer Verification
Allows roofing contractors to verify rolls supplied meet necessary length, width, straightness, and flatness requirements, reducing material waste and enhancing installation quality.

  • Research and Development
Assists material developers and testing labs in characterizing product performance and physical properties during development or modification of roofing membranes.

  • Building Compliance and Assurance
Supports architects, engineers, and regulatory bodies by providing objective test data ensuring roofing waterproofing materials adhere to European standards.

  • EN 13956 – Flexible sheets for waterproofing – Plastic and rubber sheets for roof waterproofing – Definitions and characteristics. EN 1848-2 complements this standard by focusing on measurement of physical dimensions.

  • EN 13707 – Bitumen sheets for waterproofing – Reinforced bitumen sheets for roof waterproofing. While focused on bitumen, it is part of the broader series related to flexible waterproofing sheets.

By adhering to EN 1848-2:2001, stakeholders ensure consistency in testing flexible plastic and rubber sheets for roofing applications, enhance product reliability, and support sustainable construction practices across the European market.
