Blinds and shutters - Resistance to repeated operations (mechanical endurance) - Methods of testing
This European Standard specifies the tests to be carried out to determine the mechanical endurance of products comprising :
- internal blinds,
- external blinds,
- shutters,
according to a defined number of extension/retraction cycles of the curtain and tilting of the laths (for blinds and shutters with tilting laths).
It applies to complete products e.g. those equipped with their hardware and operating mechanisms in normal operating conditions.
Manual override mechanisms for use in case of mechanical breakdown are excluded when they form part of motorized blinds and shutters.
¾ Abschlüsse innen;
¾ Markisen;
- les stores intérieurs ;
- les stores extérieurs ;
- les fermetures ;

Overview
EN 14201:2004 (CEN) defines standardized methods of testing the mechanical endurance (resistance to repeated operations) of complete blinds and shutters - internal blinds, external blinds and shutters - under normal operating conditions. The standard specifies how to carry out a defined number of extension/retraction cycles of the curtain and tilting cycles for lath-type products to verify durability and operational performance. Manual override mechanisms fitted solely for emergency use in motorized units are excluded.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of testing: complete products including hardware and operating mechanisms; tests measure endurance up to the target number of cycles or until failure.
- Types of operation covered:
- Rotation (gear with crank handle, winch)
- Open operating mechanisms (cord/belt with reel)
- Endless mechanisms (cord or chain)
- Direct/manual pull (hand, wand, lever)
- Power-operated drives (use the product’s drive)
- Test rig and preparation: samples mounted in operating position, with guides, handles and projection mechanisms; non-automatic locks left unlocked.
- Pre-test and environment:
- Validation run of five cycles for curtain and, if applicable, five tilting cycles; reset counter to zero.
- Standard test temperature: 23 °C ± 5 °C; lubrication only as manufacturer specifies.
- Reference velocities and stops (per Table 1):
- Gear with crank handle / winch / wand: 60 rpm ± 10 rpm
- Cord, belt, endless or direct pull: 15 m/min ± 5 m/min
- Power-operated: speed of the installed drive
- Operational details:
- Motor stops typically at 20 mm from phase end to account for inertia.
- For open mechanisms with reel, the test procedure accounts for belt un/re-winding and may include added mass to reproduce inertia.
- Tilt cycles: conducted at reference velocity; for mono‑control systems half of tilt cycles may be included in extension/retraction testing.
- Results & reporting: procedures for expression of results and required test report contents are specified; Annex A addresses suitability testing for inertial reels.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers: durability verification during design and production.
- Independent test laboratories: standardized test procedures for certification and product claims.
- Certification bodies & specifiers: assess compliance with performance classes and safety requirements.
- Architects, façade engineers and installers: select appropriate products based on proven mechanical endurance for building projects.
- R&D teams: identify failure modes and improve mechanisms.
