Windows, doors, shutters and blinds - Bullet resistance - Requirements and classification
This standard specifies the requirements and classification that windows, doors, shutters and blinds must satisfy when tested in accordance with prEN 1523. This standard is applicable to attacks by hand guns, rifles and shotguns on windows, doors, shutters and blinds complete with their frames and infills, for use in both internal an external locations in buildings. Shutters and blinds should be tested separately and not in conjunction with a window or door, in order to achieve classification in terms of bullet resistance.

Overview
EN 1522:1998 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the bullet resistance requirements and classification for windows, doors, shutters, and blinds. This standard ensures these building components provide adequate protection against ballistic threats from various firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Applicable to both internal and external building locations, EN 1522:1998 addresses the need for enhanced safety and security in constructions vulnerable to projectile attacks.
The standard specifies testing methods in accordance with prEN 1523 to classify the resistance levels. It differentiates between window and door assemblies, as well as shutters and blinds, which must be tested separately to ascertain their specific bullet resistance capabilities. By following EN 1522 guidelines, manufacturers and architects can guarantee the performance and classification of security glazing, frames, and infill materials.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
EN 1522 applies to windows, doors, shutters, and blinds complete with their frames and infills, intended for both interior and exterior use. The requirements cover resistance against handguns, rifles, and shotgun attacks.Bullet Resistance Testing
Testing is conducted per prEN 1523 procedures that simulate firearm attacks to evaluate the resistance level. Windows, doors, shutters, and blinds are each tested independently to establish clear, reliable bullet-resistant classifications.Classification System
The classification system ranks products based on their ability to withstand ballistic impact, providing an easy reference for selecting appropriate security solutions. This assists customers and specifiers in matching security components to threat levels.Material and Assembly Considerations
The standard accounts for the complete assembly, including frames and infills, which are critical to the overall bullet resistance. Shutters and blinds are assessed separately to ensure each element meets the necessary standards.
Applications
Security Building Design
EN 1522:1998 is integral for architects and engineers designing buildings requiring enhanced protection against firearms, such as banks, government facilities, embassies, and law enforcement buildings.Residential Security Solutions
The standard supports manufacturers of reinforced home doors, windows, and shutters aimed at deterring or preventing ballistic intrusion in high-risk residential areas.Commercial and Industrial Installations
Commercial properties and industrial sites vulnerable to criminal activity benefit from compliance with EN 1522, enhancing occupant safety and asset protection.Retrofit and Renovation Projects
Upgrading existing structures with EN 1522-certified components ensures improved security without full replacements, supporting cost-effective safety enhancements.
