Overview

EN 14115:2001 is a CEN test method that specifies how to assess the burning behaviour / ease of ignition of industrial and technical textiles used for marquees, large tents, tarpaulins and related structures. The standard defines equipment, specimen preparation, conditioning, test procedure and reporting for ignitability testing of textiles exposed to combined heat radiation and hot gases with a pilot flame. It is not intended for small camping tents, awnings, internal linings or other interior features.

Keywords: EN 14115:2001, burning behaviour, textiles, marquees, ease of ignition, ignitability test, CEN standard.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to industrial/technical textiles for tarpaulins, large tents, marquees, airducts, etc.; excludes small camping tents, linings and awnings.
  • Principle: Specimens are exposed to heat radiation and hot gas flow; a pilot flame ignites emitted gases; ignition, flame spread and damage are recorded.
  • Specimen: Rectangular samples 600 mm × 180 mm; minimum of four specimens per sample (additional tests for anisotropic materials).
  • Conditioning: 20 °C ±5, relative humidity 50 % ±15 for at least 24 h; test within 3 minutes after removal from conditioning or sealed container.
  • Apparatus: 500 W electric heater with ceramic body and sleeve, adjustable fresh-air plate, test specimen support grid with spikes, non-combustible plate above specimen, propane pilot burner (flat “fish-tail” flame) and exhaust hood with forced ventilation. Air speed under the hood shall not exceed 0.2 m/s at the grid edge.
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Heater-to-specimen vertical distance ≈ 30 mm; horizontal axis distance to lower edge ≈ 75 mm.
    • Pilot flame applied at defined times after test start (20 s, 45 s, 1 min 15 s, … up to 4 min 45 s) for 5 s each, never while specimen is already burning.
    • Test runs at least 5 minutes and continues until specimen is fully extinguished.
    • Record ignition times, flaming durations, droplet behaviour, char/damage length and width, glowing persistence and smoke characteristics.
  • Calibration & safety: Annex describes calibration of the electric burner using a blackened copper calorimeter. Warning about toxic/noxious gases-use suitable extraction and PPE.
  • Reporting: Manufacturer ID, material description, nominal thickness and mass per area, test conditions, ignition times, damage dimensions (mm), flaming times (s) and observations.

Applications

EN 14115:2001 is used to:

  • Evaluate ignitability of tent and marquee fabrics during product development.

  • Guide material selection by manufacturers of coated fabrics, technical textiles and tarpaulins.

Who uses this standard

  • Textile and PVC-coated fabric manufacturers
  • Tent, marquee and tarpaulin producers
  • Accredited test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Fire safety engineers, event organisers and procurement teams
