Overview

EN 4115:2010 - "Aerospace series - Cushion, rubber for clamps - Dimensions, masses" is a CEN standard that defines the required characteristics, dimensional profiles and unit masses for rubber cushions used with aerospace clamps (see EN 3730, EN 4113, EN 4114). It covers material selection, configuration, designation, marking, quality assurance and packaging for rubber cushion inserts used in aircraft clamp assemblies. Temperature and environmental limits are specified in the standard (see Table 1).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Materials and elastomer classes
    • S (Silicone, VMQ) - rust colour, hardness 70 IRHD, density ~1.23 g/cm³, temperature range ≈ −55 °C to 200 °C (short excursions to 260 °C). Suitable for hot air and phosphate-ester based fluids; not for hydrocarbon fluids.
    • F (Fluorosilicone, FVMQ) - blue, hardness 70 IRHD, density ~1.47 g/cm³, temperature range ≈ −55 °C to 180 °C (short excursions to 200 °C). Suitable for hydrocarbon fluids; not for phosphate-ester fluids except occasional splash.
    • V (Fluorocarbon, FPM) - brown, hardness 70 IRHD, density ~2.05 g/cm³, temperature range ≈ −20 °C to 200 °C (short excursions to 260 °C). Good for fuels, oils and many synthetic fluids; limited resistance to phosphate-ester fluids.
  • Configuration, dimensions and masses
    • Cushion profiles, maximum dimensions and valid deviations of form are defined (Figure 1 and Table 2). Dimensions are in millimetres; unspecified dimensions are maximum values. Metal band profile and size codes (e.g., 1N, 2L) link cushions to clamp types.
    • Unit mass calculation: M (g) = 0.001 × density (g/cm³) × Q (mm²) × l (mm) + m, where Q is cushion section area, l is cushion length and m is wedge mass (~0.1–0.3 g).
  • Designation and marking
    • Standard gives a designation format (example: EN4115F2L0025) to identify elastomer, size code and length. Marking follows the related clamp standard.
  • Quality and packaging
    • Quality assurance per EN 9100. Packaging must protect cushions in transit and include manufacturer, identity block, order number and delivery date.

Applications and users

  • Intended for aerospace clamp assemblies (saddle, loop and P-type clamps) where rubber cushions reduce vibration, protect tubing/lines and ensure secure clamping.
  • Primary users: aerospace OEMs, clamp manufacturers, component suppliers, design and maintenance engineers, procurement and quality departments specifying clamp cushions to EN 4115.

Related standards

  • Normative references: EN 2261 (VMQ), EN 2566 (FPM), EN 2693 (aluminium alloy), EN 3825 / EN 3826 (FVMQ), EN 9100 (QMS).
  • Clamp standards: EN 3730, EN 4113, EN 4114.
