Overview

EN 13049:2023 - Windows and doors: Soft and heavy body impact - Test method, safety requirements and classification is a CEN standard that defines how to test complete windows and pedestrian doorsets for impact from soft and heavy bodies. The standard assesses the interaction of all components (frames, sashes, infill materials including glass, hardware and glazing retainers) with emphasis on safety in use and the ability of a doorset to keep glazed parts in place. It applies to all infill materials but does not classify glass strength (see EN 12600).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and specimens: Applies to complete windows and pedestrian doorsets, including secondary sashes, mullions, transoms and fixed lights when mounted internally to the main unit.
  • Apparatus: Uses a rigid subframe and an impactor specified in EN 12600; suitable mounting, wires, pulleys and height-adjusting devices are required.
  • Conditioning: Test specimens must be conditioned 4 hours at +10 °C to +30 °C and 25 % to 75 % relative humidity before testing.
  • Pre-test operations: Operable parts are cycled five times immediately before impact.
  • Impact procedure: One impact per specimen (additional impacts only if client agrees); choose the most unfavourable impact point (centre, corners, glazing bars, rails, mullions, etc.). Impactor is released from a defined drop height and strikes perpendicular to the target; drop height accuracy ±10 mm.
  • Classification levels: Six classes (0–5) with specified drop heights: 0 = 100 mm, 1 = 200 mm, 2 = 300 mm, 3 = 450 mm, 4 = 700 mm, 5 = 950 mm.
  • Pass criteria:
    • No opening that allows the ellipsoid template E2 (EN 1630:2021) to pass.
    • No dangerous detachment (sharp/pointed edges) of casements, sashes, leaves, hardware or glazing retainers.
    • Any single dislodged part ≤ 50 g.
  • Reporting: Test report must identify the specimen, test parameters, drawings (including fixing details), environmental conditions, impact points, drop height, observed damage and final classification.

Applications

  • Manufacturers of windows, glazed pedestrian doorsets and hardware use EN 13049:2023 to validate safety performance and product development.
  • Test laboratories perform standardized impact tests and produce classification reports for CE marking, specifications or compliance.
  • Specifiers, architects and façade engineers use the classification to select safe products for public buildings, schools, hospitals and high-traffic areas.
  • Regulators and certification bodies reference the standard for safety assessments and performance documentation.

The standard EN 13049:2023 provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating the safety and performance of windows and pedestrian doorsets in relation to soft and heavy body impacts. Its scope encompasses a wide range of applications, ensuring it is relevant and applicable to various configurations and material types. This inclusivity allows for effective testing of both traditional and innovative designs. One of the primary strengths of this standard is its emphasis on safety requirements. By specifying a test method that assesses the interaction between all components of a window or doorset, the standard aims to prevent accidents and injuries from unforeseen impacts. This focus on safety is particularly pertinent for environments where pedestrian access is common, thus addressing public safety concerns directly. Furthermore, the detail that the standard applies to all types of infill materials, including glass, enhances its utility across the industry. While it explicitly states that it is not intended to classify the strength of the glass as an infill material, it does highlight the critical nature of assessing the overall system’s performance. This is especially relevant in contexts where high safety standards must be met, such as commercial buildings or educational facilities. The provision for secondary components, like moving sashes and fixed lights, to undergo similar evaluation broadens the scope of the standard and ensures that every element contributing to the overall functionality and safety of the window or doorset is considered. Additionally, the guidance that the test is best suited for glazed pedestrian doorsets with a highlighted risk of injury, yet adaptable for other types based on client needs, exemplifies the standard’s flexibility and its capability to cater to specific demands within the market. In conclusion, the EN 13049:2023 standard represents a significant advancement in the assessment of impacts on windows and doors. Its focus on comprehensive testing, safety, and adaptability to various design requirements makes it a valuable tool for manufacturers, architects, and safety professionals looking to ensure the performance and protection of their products in real-world applications.
