Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Terminology - Part 2: Visual representations and descriptions (ISO 19496-2:2017)
ISO 19496-2:2017 establishes a system for the cataloguing of defects in sheet steel enamelling. It serves for a consistent language use concerning the designation and characterization of enamelling defects. This document is limited to detectable defects and does not purport to fully take into consideration all occurring types of defects. It does not evaluate enamelling defects; the classification carried out serves for the conveyance of practical knowledge.

Steklasti in keramični emajli - Terminologija - 2. del: Vidni prikaz in opis (ISO 19496-2:2017)

Overview
EN ISO 19496-2:2017 - Vitreous and porcelain enamels: Terminology - Part 2: Visual representations and descriptions establishes a consistent, practical system for cataloguing detectable defects in sheet steel enamelling. Published by CEN as the European adoption of ISO 19496-2:2017, the document standardizes terminology, visual representations and descriptive guidance so stakeholders use a common language when identifying and reporting enamelling defects. The standard is limited to detectable defects and does not perform defect evaluation or provide acceptance criteria - it supports clear communication and knowledge transfer.
Key topics
The standard is organized to help inspectors and practitioners recognise and describe defects. Core technical topics include:
- Terms and definitions relevant to vitreous and porcelain enamels
- A structured catalogue of enamelling defects, each with:
- Further designations (alternate names)
- Visual descriptions and representations
- Typical origin and causes
- Defect categories covered (examples from the contents):
- Chipping
- Lines - hairlines, bubble lines, watermarks, linear cracks
- Lumps and dimples
- Blisters
- Spots and specks
- Crawling
- Copperheads / burn‑offs
- Fish scales
- Pinholes
- Ripples
- Poor adherence and cracks
- Cross-references to the ISO 19496 series and relevant normative references
Applications / Practical value
EN ISO 19496-2:2017 is designed for practical use where precise defect communication matters:
- Quality control and production inspection - standardizes defect descriptions on enamelled sheet steel to improve consistency between shifts, plants and suppliers
- Supplier and procurement specifications - provides agreed terminology for contracts and inspection reports
- Technical training and visual aids - useful in inspector training, defect atlases and photographic libraries
- Failure analysis and root-cause communication - the origin-and-causes notes help link visual symptoms to potential process issues
- Laboratories and certification bodies - ensures uniform reporting of observable defects during testing or audits
Who should use it
- Enamel manufacturers and applicators (porcelain/vitreous enamel coating producers)
- Steel fabricators and component manufacturers using enamelled sheet
- Quality engineers, inspectors and production supervisors
- Procurement/specification authors and technical writers
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
Related standards
- Other parts of the ISO 19496 series (see ISO website for list)
- Standards and guidance developed by ISO/TC 107 and CEN/TC 262 on metallic and inorganic coatings
