Standard Specification for Preformed Retroreflective Pavement Marking Tape for Extended Service Life

ABSTRACT
This specification covers white or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tape, that when applied to a road surface, will provide a service life normally greater than one year depending on the average daily traffic count (ADT). The preformed retroreflective pavement tape is suitable for longitudinal markings and transverse markings including word/symbol markings. It is designed to be a pavement marking with extended service life. Preformed retroreflective pavement marking tape shall be identified as: reflectivity Level I; Class 1, 2 or 3; skid resistance Level A, or B and reflectivity Level II; Class 1, 2 or 3; skid resistance Level A, or B. Color, dimensions, retroreflection, adhesion, skid resistance, durability, and wear resistance tests shall be performed to conform to the specified requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers white or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tape that, when applied to a road surface, will provide a service life normally greater than one year depending on wear and durability factors.

Overview

ASTM D4505-12(2022) - Standard Specification for Preformed Retroreflective Pavement Marking Tape for Extended Service Life - is a standard developed by ASTM International, covering requirements for white or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tape. This tape is designed for road surfaces requiring pavement markings with extended service life, typically lasting more than one year, depending on road conditions and traffic wear.

This standard ensures that retroreflective pavement marking tapes provide durability, high visibility, and proper performance for both longitudinal and transverse markings, including words and symbols. These tapes are vital for roadway safety, offering efficient night-time visibility and dependable adhesion on various pavement surfaces.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: White or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tapes designed for road surfaces, conforming to specific physical and performance properties for visibility and safety.
  • Classification:
    • Reflectivity Levels: Level I and Level II, based on initial retroreflectance requirements.
    • Classes: Class 1 (no precoated adhesive), Class 2 (precoated pressure-sensitive adhesive), and Class 3 (precoated adhesive with removable liner).
    • Skid Resistance: Level A or B, indicating tested skid resistance performance.
  • Performance Requirements:
    • Color: Must comply with specified color requirements.
    • Retroreflectivity: Must meet minimum values for luminance under standard measurement conditions.
    • Adhesion: Tested for secure bonding to pavement surfaces.
    • Durability and Wear Resistance: Evaluated for long-term performance based on materials, thickness, and surface features.
    • Skid Resistance: Ensures surfaces are safe under wet and dry driving conditions.
  • Sampling and Testing: Includes guidelines for statistically based sampling and standard test methods for reflectivity, color, skid resistance, and adhesion.

Applications

Pavement marking tapes conforming to ASTM D4505-12(2022) are widely used for:

  • Road Safety Improvements: Enhancing visual guidance for drivers during night-time and adverse weather, especially where extended marking visibility is needed.
  • Lane and Edge Delineation: Creating long-lasting lane lines, edge markings, and channelization on both asphalt and concrete pavements.
  • Transverse Markings: Marking pedestrian crossings, stop lines, and directional arrows with durable, retroreflective tapes.
  • Temporary or Permanent Markings: Suitable for both permanent road applications and temporary traffic control zones where extended service life is required.
  • Applications on Varied Surfaces: Engineered to adhere effectively to both asphalt and portland cement concrete roadways.

Benefits:

  • Reduced maintenance due to extended service life.
  • Enhanced nighttime visibility for improved roadway safety.
  • Reliable performance even on high-traffic routes.
  • Compliance with international safety standards for road markings.

Related Standards

When specifying or evaluating preformed retroreflective pavement marking tapes, consider referencing the following standards for comprehensive compliance:

  • ASTM D1000 - Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive-Coated Tapes Test Methods
  • ASTM D6628 - Color Specification for Pavement Marking Materials
  • ASTM D4061 - Measurement of Retroreflectance of Pavement Markings
