Frequently Asked Questions
ICS 21.060.40 is a classification code in the International Classification for Standards (ICS) system. It covers "Rivets". The ICS is a hierarchical classification system used to organize international, regional, and national standards, facilitating the search and identification of standards across different fields.
There are 86 standards classified under ICS 21.060.40 (Rivets). These standards are published by international and regional standardization bodies including ISO, IEC, CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI.
The International Classification for Standards (ICS) is a hierarchical classification system maintained by ISO to organize standards and related documents. It uses a three-level structure with field (2 digits), group (3 digits), and sub-group (2 digits) codes. The ICS helps users find standards by subject area and enables statistical analysis of standards development activities.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the chemical composition, mechanical (Brinell hardness), dimensional, and visual inspection requirements, and associated test methods for steel rivets used for structural fabricating purposes. The steel used to make the rivets shall be manufactured by the open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace process, and the corresponding rivets shall be made by the hot or cold heading process and are expected to be hot driven. The rivets are available in the following grades: Grade 1, carbon steel rivets for general purpose use; Grade 2, carbon manganese steel rivets for use with high strength carbon and high strength low alloy structural steels; and Grade 3, weathering steel rivets.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers three grades of steel rivets in diameters from 1/2 to 11/2 in. inclusive, for structural fabricating purposes. The grades are as follows:
Grade
Description
1
Carbon steel rivets for general purpose use
2
Carbon manganese steel rivets for use with high strength carbon and high strength low alloy structural steels
3
Weathering steel rivets
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers wire and rod in the alloys and the tempers suitable for manufacturing rivets and other similar items by cold-heading operations. The products covered by this specification shall be produced by extruding, rolling, or drawing, or a combination thereof, at the option of the producer. For heat-treated tempers, an inspection lot shall consist of an identifiable quantity of material of the same mill form, alloy, temper, and nominal diameter traceable to a heat-treat lot or lots, and subjected to inspection at one time. On the other hand, an inspection lot shall consist of an identifiable quantity of material of the same mill form, alloy, temper, and nominal diameter subjected to inspection for non heat-treated tempers. Samples for chemical analysis shall be taken from the material by drilling, sawing, milling, turning, or clipping a representative piece or pieces to obtain a prepared sample. One tension test per specimen shall be taken. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking for each lot of specimen shall be established by testing the previously selected tension-test samples for lot acceptance purposes. Variations from the specified diameter, length, and straightness shall not exceed the permissible variations prescribed. The material shall be supplied in the mill finish and shall conform by the requirements of this specification and shall be commercially sound.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers wire and rod in the alloys (Note 1) shown in Table 1 and the tempers shown in Table 2 [Table 3] and Table 4 [Table 5], suitable for manufacturing rivets and other similar items by cold-heading operations.
Note 1: Throughout this specification the use of the term alloy in the general sense includes aluminum as well as aluminum alloy.
Note 2: For rolled or cold-finished wire and rod, see Specification B211, and for extruded wire and rod, see Specification B221.
1.2 Alloy and temper designations are in accordance with ANSI H35.1/H35.1M. The equivalent Unified Numbering System alloy designations are those of Table 1 preceded by A9, for example, A91100 for aluminum 1100 in accordance with Practice E527.
1.3 For acceptance criteria for inclusion of new aluminum and aluminum alloys in this specification, see Annex A2.
1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.4.1 The SI units are shown either in brackets or in separate tables.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the chemical, mechanical, and dimensional requirements, and associated test methods for steel rivets for use in boilers and pressure vessels, and steel bars for use in the manufacture of such rivets. Two grades of steel are covered here, as follows: Grade A and Grade B. The steel used to make the rivets shall be manufactured by open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen process, and the corresponding rivets shall be manufactured from steel bars conforming to the applicable bar grade ordered. The steel shall undergo heat and product analysis for measurements of chemical contents for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. Finished bars and rivets shall go through rivet bend, rivet flattening, bar tensile, and bar bend tests for measurements of mechanical properties such as ratio of bend diameter to diameter of the shank for rivets, and tensile strength, yield point, elongation, and ratio of bend diameter to diameter of specimen for bars.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers steel rivets for use in boilers and pressure vessels and steel bars for use in the manufacture of rivets.
1.2 Two grades are covered:
1.2.1 Grade A—Bars having a yield point of 23 000 psi (160 MPa) minimum with carbon 0.18 % maximum.
1.2.2 Grade B—Bars having a yield point of 29 000 psi (200 MPa) minimum with carbon 0.28 % maximum.
1.2.3 Rivets are manufactured from the applicable bar grade.
1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers chemical and mechanical requirements for nine property classes of carbon and alloy steel metric rivets in nominal diameters M01 through M36 suited for use in general engineering applications.
1.2 This specification does not cover dimensional requirements for rivets of any property class. When referencing this specification for procurement purposes, it is mandatory that size, type, style, and any special dimensions of the product be additionally specified.
1.2.1 In case of any conflict in requirements, the requirements of the individual product specification shall take precedence over those of this general specification.
1.2.2 The purchaser may specify additional requirements which do not negate any of the provisions of this general specification or of the individual product specification. Such additional requirements, the acceptance of which are subject to negotiation with the supplier, must be included in the order information (see Section 3).
1.3 When agreed on by the purchaser, Class 5.8 fasteners may be supplied when either Classes 4.6 or 4.8 are ordered; Class 4.8 may be supplied when Class 4.6 is ordered;
1.4 The product size range for which each property class is applicable is given in Table 1 on chemical composition requirements, and the mechanical requirements table (see Table 2).
1.5 Appendix X1 explains the significance of the property class designation numerals.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
