ISO/TC 107/SC 8 - Chemical conversion coatings
Revêtements de conversion chimique
General Information
This document specifies a test method to measure the friction coefficient of chemical conversion coating sheet products and coiled products. This document is applicable to measure or compare the friction properties of hot-dip galvanized, lubricated and resin coated steel sheet, when tested under the same conditions.

ISO/TR 15922:2011 describes the methods to evaluate the properties of dark-stain phenomenon observed in chromate conversion-coated coiled and sheet products. Chromate conversion coatings, with trivalent or hexavalent chromium ions, are applied to hot-dip metallic zinc and electroplated-zinc steel products to enhance corrosion resistance of the components. When zinc-coated packed coiled and sheet products with conversion coatings are unpacked after long-term storage at elevated temperature and high relative humidity, the surface of the sheet products appears tarnished. This discolouration appears as dark or black stain and influences the appearance and corrosion resistance, when parts are produced using these affected sheets.

This International Standard specifies the information to be supplied by the purchaser to the finisher, requirements and test methods for electropolishing as a means of smoothing and passivating stainless steel alloys in the S2XXXX, S3XXXX and S4XXXX series, and the precipitation hardened alloys (see ISO/TR 15510 for information on composition).

This International Standard specifies requirements for black oxide coatings on iron and steel (including cast and wrought iron, carbon steel, low alloyed steel and stainless steel). Black oxide coatings can be used to diminish friction between sliding or bearing surfaces or for decorative purposes or to reduce light reflection. Such coatings, with or without supplementary preservative treatment, may be used where a black surface is required. Only very limited corrosion protection is obtained under mildly corrosive conditions even with preservative treatment. This International Standard does not specify requirements for the condition, finish or surface roughness of the substrate prior to black oxidizing.

Specifies requirements relating to coatings intended to give protection against corrosion. Finishes for giving particular colours only or specifically to improve paint adhesion are not covered by this International Standard. Gives furhermore the method of application of chromate conversion coatings and a classification.

ISO 9717:2010 specifies requirements for the processing of ferrous metals, aluminium, zinc, cadmium and their alloys to produce coatings consisting essentially of inorganic phosphates, which are intended to be used in conjunction with supplementary treatments for the protection of the basis metal against corrosion and to provide anti-wear properties to sliding surfaces, adhesion to organic finishes and ease of cold-forming operations.

Specifies requirements relating to the coatings intended to give protection against corrosion and as a base for other coatings. Requirements are concerned with surface preparation, method of application, electrical insulation resistance, adhesion, corrosion resistance, coating mass per unit area, coating mass significance, coating identification, sampling and test specimens, classification. Annex A describes qualitative testing of the layer composition, annex B gives treatment sequence options.
