CEN/TC 162/WG 1 - General requirements for protective clothing

This document contains a list of terms which are frequently used in the standardization of protective clothing (5.1.4) and protective equipment worn on the body, including hand and arm protection and lifejackets, and definitions of these terms.
The definitions are intended to support an unambiguous use of the terms listed.
This document is intended to serve as a reference document for the Working Groups of CEN/TC 162 and ISO/TC 94/SC 13 to ascertain what definitions already exist and may be used for setting up new standards and to provide guidance in the elaboration of new definitions.

This document lists terms and definitions related to core terms in the field of smart garments providing protection against heat and flame (i.e. advanced garments and ensembles of garments as mentioned in the Introduction). It is intended to facilitate communications, for example, between organizations and individuals in industry and those who interact with them.

This standard specifies the properties of protective clothing that minimize the risk of its entanglement or drawing-in by moving parts when the wearer is working at or near hazardous moving machines or devices. This standard does not include protective clothing against injuries by special moving machine parts for which specific standards exist, e.g. protective clothing for users of chainsaws.

This European Standard specifies material and design requirements for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing, including hoods and caps, used as part of a total earthed system, to avoid incendiary discharges, where the minimum ignition energy of an explosive atmosphere is not less than 0,016 mJ.
In the context of this European Standard, a total earthed system is one in which personnel and other conductors are connected to earth via a resistance of less than 108 Ω.
The material and design requirements do not presume adequate earthing of additional equipment worn or carried in contact with clothing, e.g. breathing apparatus, etc. If such additional equipment is required to be earthed, other requirements beyond the scope of this European Standard may be necessary.
The scope of this standard does not include electrostatic dissipative protective gloves or footwear that are separate and not integral parts of garments.
The material and design requirements may not provide sufficient protection in oxygen enriched flammable atmospheres.

This European Standard is not applicable for protection against mains voltages.

ISO 13688:2012 specifies general performance requirements for ergonomics, innocuousness, size designation, ageing, compatibility and marking of protective clothing and the information to be supplied by the manufacturer with the protective clothing.
ISO 13688:2012 is only intended to be used in combination with other standards containing requirements for specific protective performance and not on a stand-alone basis.

This European Standard specifies a test method for materials intended to be used in the manufacturing of electrostatic dissipative protective clothing (or gloves) to avoid incendiary discharge. This test method is not applicable for materials to be used in the manufacturing of protection clothing or gloves against mains voltages.

This Technical Report sets out guidance for the selection, use, care and maintenance of clothing designed to provide protection to the wearer. The guidance set out in this Technical Report are intended for all types of protective clothing and may be completed by additional specific guidelines for clothing designed to address specific risks.

This European Standard specifies electrostatic charge decay requirements and the appropriate test method for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing to avoid incendiary discharges for materials not covered by EN 1149-1, e.g. textile materials with core conducting fibres.

This European Standard specifies a test method for measuring the electrical vertical resistance of protective clothing materials. This European Standard is not applicable for specifying protection against mains voltages.    NOTE:  Further information is given in the informative annex A.

This document specifies requirements for garments that support the protection against tick bites. The document applies to body covering garments (at least covering the torso, arms and legs) where protection against tick bites, which is provided by garments as physical barriers, is reinforced by industrial treatment with the biocide permethrin of the fabrics, fibres or yarns prior to confection. The specified requirements focus on prevention of bites by the nymph stage of the tick Ixodes ricinus, which is the most relevant stage and species for public and occupational health in Europe.
This document specifies requirements and the tests for garments containing permethrin to provide sufficient assistance in protection against tick bites, and to be durable and safe for the user.
NOTE 1    Non-permethrin containing garments covering the torso, arms and legs and feet offer some protection against tick bites, but are insufficient under high exposure to ticks, which can crawl over the fabric to reach bare skin and bite. Garments that comply with this document and cover at least torso, arms and legs to counter ticks from crawling over the fabric to reach bare skin and bite thereby provide substantial protection.
NOTE 2    The importance of following manufacturers laundering instructions to prevent early deterioration of the effect of permethrin treatment is stressed throughout the document.
