Specification for protective clothing for use where there is a risk of entanglement with moving parts

This standard specifies the properties of protective clothing that minimize the risk of its entanglement or drawing-in by moving parts when the wearer is working at or near hazardous moving machines or devices. This standard does not include protective clothing against injuries by special moving machine parts for which specific standards exist, e.g. protective clothing for users of chainsaws.

Overview

EN 510:2019 (CEN) - Specification for protective clothing for use where there is a risk of entanglement with moving parts - defines design and marking requirements for garments intended to minimize the risk of entanglement or drawing‑in by hazardous moving machines. The standard is complementary to the general requirements of EN ISO 13688 and applies where machine safeguarding cannot fully eliminate entanglement hazards. It does not cover special machine‑specific protective clothing (for example chainsaw garments covered by other standards).

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Design principles: garments must provide a covering of other clothing, a close fit and a smooth outer surface to reduce snagging.
  • Garment types: permitted configurations include combinations such as waist jacket + bib‑and‑brace overall, waist jacket + sleeveless coverall, or a coverall with sleeves.
  • Fastenings: no exposed loose ends; fastening elements must be concealed and folds created by fastenings must lie on the inside. Fastening functionality is verified after cleaning by manual open/close cycles (per EN ISO 13688 procedures).
  • Cuffs and hems: no turn‑ups on cuffs or trouser lower hems to prevent loose fabric.
  • Pockets: no external pockets. Internal pockets above the waist must only be accessible from inside; lower internal pockets with external openings must be closable.
  • Adjustability: waist, cuffs and trouser bottoms must be adjustable to ensure a close fit; braces on bib overalls must be sewn at the back and adjustable with ends lying inside the bib.
  • Dimensional change and sizing: dimensional change after cleaning and general size designation follow EN ISO 13688.
  • Marking and information: garments must carry the ISO 7000‑2411 pictogram (protection against moving parts) and the manufacturer must supply warnings about the requirement for close fit and correct use of two‑piece ensembles.
  • Normative context: clause structure, testing and conformity references are linked to EN ISO 13688; Annex ZA maps the standard to essential requirements of EU Regulation 2016/425 (PPE).

Applications and Users

  • Intended for workplaces where personnel work at or near hazardous moving machinery and where engineering safeguards alone are insufficient.
  • Primary users: PPE manufacturers, product designers, safety engineers, procurement/specification teams, conformity assessment bodies and occupational safety managers.
  • Typical sectors: manufacturing, maintenance, assembly, material handling, and any industrial environment with rotating or moving machine parts where entanglement risk exists.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 13688:2013 - Protective clothing: general requirements (normative reference for EN 510).
  • EU Regulation 2016/425 - Personal Protective Equipment (see Annex ZA for mapping).
  • ISO 7000 - Graphical symbols for equipment (ISO 7000‑2411 pictogram used for marking).
