Introduction
The basic function of gas-fired heating boiler is to generate heat by direct heat transfer in a heat
exchanger, from the combustion gasses to the water.
The boiler can include in one design more than one function. It can include for example:
— a sanitary hot water function;
— a function to supply the combustion air from the outside/open air;
— a function to dispose the combustion products to the outside/open air.
The boiler can be supplied to the market in more than one part. If the boiler is supplied to the market in
multiple parts, the boiler is the assembly of various parts according to the instructions for installation.
Boilers can be designed to be connected to specific parts of a building. Connection to a chimney and the
means of combustion air supply is particularly relevant.
Matters related to quality assurance systems, tests during production, and certificates of conformity of
auxiliary devices are not dealt with in this series of European Standards.

The SIST EN 15502-2-1:2022+A1:2024 standard provides a comprehensive framework for gas-fired central heating boilers classified as type C appliances and specific types B2, B3, and B5, with nominal heat inputs not exceeding 1,000 kW. Its scope is well-defined, ensuring clarity for manufacturers and stakeholders regarding the requirements and testing methods applicable to these appliances. One of the key strengths of this standard is its detailed classification system, which explicitly categorizes appliances based on their construction and operational characteristics. This includes consideration for various burner types such as atmospheric burners, fan-assisted burners, and fully premixed burners. Additionally, the standard addresses essential parameters such as maximum operating pressures, heat transfer fluid temperatures, and the conditions that may lead to condensation, thus enhancing safety and operational efficiency. The inclusion of specific requirements for installation and operational contexts further strengthens the standard's relevance. It stipulates that these gas-fired central heating boilers must be designed for indoor installation or in partially protected locations, and must accommodate both instantaneous and storage hot water production. This versatility ensures that manufacturers can design products that meet both residential and commercial needs. Moreover, the document emphasizes the need for specific declarations of boiler types (e.g., condensing, low temperature, or standard) in the installation instructions, providing a clear guideline for users regarding efficiency and operational characteristics. The reference to risk assessment methodologies for alternative constructions is also a notable addition, allowing for flexibility in design while ensuring safety standards are maintained. Despite its thoroughness, the standard also outlines exclusions and limitations, addressing appliances above 1,000 kW, those connected to variable quality gas grids, and other specific equipment types not covered under its scope. This clarity helps prevent misinterpretation and underscores the focus of the standard on specific categories of appliances, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of regulatory compliance. Overall, SIST EN 15502-2-1:2022+A1:2024 effectively balances comprehensiveness with specificity, providing crucial guidance for manufacturers, installers, and users of gas-fired central heating boilers. The standard not only aids in ensuring product safety and performance but also contributes to the development of more energy-efficient heating solutions in line with current technological advancements.
