Overview
EN 1201:2005 is a CEN (European) standard that specifies requirements for potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate (KH2PO4) used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard describes product identification, physical and chemical properties, minimum purity criteria, limits for common impurities and trace elements, and the corresponding test and sampling methods. It also provides information on use in water treatment and references relevant analytical standards.

- Main composition measured by an alkalimetric titration (pH endpoints ~4.45 and 9.22) to derive P2O5 and K2O.
- Impurities and trace elements assessed by standard analytical techniques (atomic absorption, ICP, hydride generation methods) as referenced.
Applications and users
- Water utilities and municipal water treatment operators use EN 1201:2005 to ensure dosing materials meet drinking water quality expectations.
- Chemical manufacturers and suppliers of KH2PO4 apply the standard for product specification, quality control and labelling.
- Analytical laboratories use the referenced test methods for compliance testing and acceptance criteria.
- Regulators and procurement teams reference the standard when assessing whether a potassium phosphate product is suitable for potable water treatment.
