Overview

EN 13336:2022 - Leather - Upholstery leather characteristics - Guide for selection of leather for furniture (CEN) provides guidelines on test methods, recommended performance values, sampling and conditioning procedures for upholstery leather used in furniture. The standard applies to aniline, semi‑aniline, nubuck/suede and coated/pigmented leathers but excludes furs, hair‑on and wool‑on leathers. It replaces EN 13336:2012 and was approved by CEN in 2022.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Guidance to help buyers and sellers agree measurable performance criteria for furniture upholstery leather.
  • Sampling: Specimen sampling follows EN ISO 2418; when whole hides are not available, sampling details must be recorded in test reports.
  • Conditioning: Physical/mechanical/fastness tests use the reference atmosphere in EN ISO 2419; chemical tests follow EN ISO 4044.
  • Fundamental characteristics (Table 1): Mandatory characteristics include:
    • pH and ΔpH (EN ISO 4045) - minimum pH 3.5 and limits on ΔpH when pH < 4.0.
    • Tear load (EN ISO 3377-1) - minimum average values.
    • Colour fastness and staining (EN ISO 11640, EN ISO 11641) - resistance to rubbing (dry/wet/artificial perspiration) with specified grey‑scale minima.
    • Colour fastness to artificial light (EN ISO 105‑B02).
    • Dry flex resistance (EN ISO 5402‑1) - new fundamental parameter in 2022 edition.
    • Dry finish adhesion (EN ISO 11644) and colour fastness to water spotting (EN ISO 15700).
  • Complementary characteristics (Table 2): Agreed between parties according to end use, e.g. cold crack resistance (EN ISO 17233) and burning behaviour (EN 1021‑1/2).
  • Results evaluation: When assessing leather damage, magnification (6×–8×) is required for several test methods.

Practical applications and users

EN 13336:2022 is intended for:

  • Furniture manufacturers and designers selecting appropriate upholstery leather for durability, appearance and safety.
  • Leather tanners and finishers specifying production targets (pH, tear strength, adhesion, flex resistance).
  • Testing laboratories and quality control teams implementing standardized sampling, conditioning and test methods.
  • Procurement professionals and specifiers writing performance-based requirements and contracts.
  • Retailers and warranty managers using standardized performance data to inform consumers and care instructions.

Using EN 13336 helps reduce disputes, clarify expectations, and improve product reliability for upholstery leather used in domestic and contract furniture.
