Overview
EN ISO 7369:2020 - Pipework: Metal hoses and hose assemblies - Vocabulary is the harmonized CEN/ISO vocabulary for metal hoses used in pipework. The standard defines current terms for metal hoses, metal hose assemblies and their component parts. It applies specifically to:
- Stripwound metal hoses and hose assemblies, and
- Corrugated metal hoses and hose assemblies.
Notes clarify that these hoses may be braided, covered or lined, and Annex A provides equivalent terminology in English, French, German and Dutch. EN ISO 7369:2020 supersedes the 2004 edition and reflects technical updates and new definitions.
Key topics
This vocabulary standard establishes unambiguous definitions used across design, manufacture, testing and procurement of metal hose systems. Core terms include:
- metal hose, stripwound metal hose, corrugated metal hose
- metal hose assembly, end fitting, ferrule, attachment
- Size and pressure designations: nominal size (DN), nominal pressure (PN), design pressure, maximum allowable pressure, maximum operating pressure
- Performance and testing terms: burst pressure, test pressure
- Mechanical attributes: flexibility, pliability, bend radius, minimum bend radius
- Construction and protection: strip, packing, profile, pitch of hose profile, braid, metal braid strand, external/internal protection, coiling
The document also introduces or revises definitions for items such as design pressure, metal braid strand, braided braid, and nominal size of metal hose assembly, and updates guidance on temperature-related definitions.
Applications
EN ISO 7369:2020 is a foundational reference wherever clear, consistent terminology is needed for metal hose systems:
- Technical specifications and product datasheets for metal hoses and hose assemblies

- Manufacturing, quality control and testing procedures (to ensure consistent interpretation of test and design pressures)
- Procurement and contract language to avoid ambiguity in orders and compliance checks
- Standards writers and regulatory bodies aligning national standards with ISO/CEN terminology
Who uses this standard
- Hose and fitting manufacturers and suppliers
- Mechanical, piping and process engineers
- Test laboratories and inspection bodies
- Standards committees and technical writers
- Procurement and maintenance teams specifying hose assemblies

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).

This document was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) TechnicalCommittee
CEN/TC 342, Metal hoses, hose assemblies, bellows and expansion joints, in collaboration with ISO
Technical Committee ISO/TC 5, Ferrous metal pipes and metallic fittings, Subcommittee SC 11, Metal
hoses and expansion joints, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and
CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 7369:2004), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— shift updated normative references into Bibliography;
— introduction of new definitions related to "design pressure", "metal braid strand", "braided braid"
and " nominal size of metal hose assembly";
— revision of definitions related to "maximum allowable pressure", "maximum allowable temperature"
and "minimum allowable temperature";
— update of Annex A to include French, German and Dutch terms and deletion of Annexes B, C, D and E.

The article discusses the need to revise the standard ISO 7369:2004 which is outdated. The revision will update the definitions according to EN ISO 10380, EN 14585, and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). The project to revise the standard is led by Eric Winterbert under VA/CEN. The specific scope of the revision will be determined by the project group before starting the NWIP ballot. The standard defines terms related to metal hoses, metal hose assemblies, and their component parts, including stripwound and corrugated metal hoses.
