Overview

EN 14187-7:2019 - published by CEN - is a laboratory test method for determining the resistance to flame of cold applied joint sealants intended for joints in roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. The standard specifies the test principle, required apparatus, specimen preparation, step‑by‑step procedure and reporting requirements to assess how a sealant behaves when exposed to a defined flame treatment.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to cold applied joint sealants used in joints in roads, air fields and other trafficked areas.
  • Test principle: Sealant specimens are exposed to a controlled flame for a specified time and then inspected for ignition, hardening, flow, cracking, flaking, separation and other effects.
  • Apparatus and materials:
    • High‑temperature laboratory burner rated up to 3 000 W (approx. 200 g propane/h at operating capacity).
    • Draught shield: open-ended cylinder, diameter (125 ± 3) mm, height (300 ± 5) mm.
    • Steel specimen support: rods forming a rectangular opening 40 mm × 50 mm.
    • Temperature measuring device: up to 300 °C, accuracy ±5 °C.
  • Specimen preparation: One specimen made and cured in accordance with EN ISO 8340 method B.
  • Procedure (high level):
    • Assemble apparatus with burner beneath the draught shield and specimen support on top.
    • Regulate burner to produce a steady temperature of (260 ± 10) °C for (120 ± 1) s.
    • Replace the temperature sensor with the test specimen (sealant face 12.5 mm × 75 mm horizontal) centered on the support.
    • Expose for (120 ± 1) s, observe behaviour, then remove burner, cool to room temperature and inspect.
  • Reporting: The test report shall include reference to EN 14187-7:2019, sealant identification and batch, support and primer details, conditioning, test time and temperature, observed effects, any deviations, and test date.
  • Safety: Warning to perform tests under suitable conditions to protect personnel from fire, smoke and toxic combustion products.

Applications and who uses it

  • Intended users:
    • Sealant manufacturers for product qualification and development.
    • Independent test laboratories performing conformity or performance testing.
    • Road authorities, airport operators and contracting organisations specifying materials for trafficked joints.
    • Specifiers and procurement teams requiring documented flame resistance performance.
  • Practical uses:
    • Verifying that a sealant will not ignite, excessively flow or degrade under brief flame exposure.
    • Supporting material selection for high‑risk or safety‑sensitive pavement joints.
    • Documenting compliance as part of product technical files or tender evidence.
