Overview

EN ISO 9519:2023 (identical to ISO 9519:2023) covers requirements for single rungs and rungs for dog-step ladders used on ships and other marine structures. The standard specifies types, structure, dimensions, technical requirements, inspection and designation for rungs fitted to vertical panels or masts. EN ISO 9519:2023 supersedes the earlier EN 29519:1993 and extends the scope, dimensions and inspection requirements compared with the previous edition.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Rungs are classified into Type A/B (for panels or masts > 300 mm diameter) and Type C (for masts ≤ 300 mm).
  • Structure and dimensions
    • Detailed structural examples and dimensional tables are provided (see Table 1 in the standard) - width, depth, height and theoretical weights are specified for each type.
    • Usage diagrams define where single rungs are required (a single rung is fitted when the distance is more than 600 mm) and minimum spacing in dog-step ladders (distance not less than 150 mm).
  • Materials
    • Rungs shall be fabricated from steel meeting ISO 630-2 requirements; material grade must be at least S235.
  • Surface treatment and corrosion protection
    • Protective coatings must be compatible with the rung location.
    • Rungs installed in ballast tanks must meet PSPC (performance standard for protective coating) requirements.
    • Free edges shall be rounded to R2 mm, and hot-dip galvanizing is recommended after cleaning and de-rusting. Galvanized coating thickness shall comply with ISO 1461.
  • Appearance, tolerances and inspection
    • The standard specifies acceptable appearance, tolerances and inspection criteria for surface treatment, appearance and dimensional conformity.
  • Designation
    • Rules for marking and designating rungs are included to ensure traceability and compliance.

Applications

EN ISO 9519:2023 is directly applicable to:

  • Shipbuilders and shipyards specifying and fitting rungs and dog-step ladders on new builds and refits.
  • Marine equipment manufacturers producing rungs, ladder components and deck fittings.
  • Classification societies, surveyors and inspectors assessing conformance for safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Naval architects and marine engineers integrating access solutions on masts, vertical panels and other marine structures.

Related standards

  • ISO 630-2 - Structural steels (material delivery conditions)
  • ISO 1461 - Hot-dip galvanized coatings (specifications and test methods)
  • ISO 1035-2 - (referenced for dimension basis)
  • PSPC - Performance standard for protective coating (ballast tank coatings)

EN ISO 9519:2023 provides clear, tested requirements for safe, durable and inspectable rungs and dog-step ladders used in marine environments, helping manufacturers and ship operators meet material, dimensional and corrosion-protection expectations.
