Overview
EN 16003:2011 (CEN) is the European standard for calcium magnesium carbonate (dolomite) used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard defines the identity, physical and chemical characteristics, minimum purity requirements and corresponding test methods for calcium magnesium carbonate. It also provides information relevant to its use in water treatment and guidance on sampling, labelling, transportation and storage. Note: conformity with EN 16003:2011 does not by itself imply regulatory approval in any EU/EFTA Member State.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Identification
- Chemical name: Calcium magnesium carbonate (dolomite)
- Relative molecular mass: 184.39
- CAS Registry Number: 16389-88-1
- EINECS reference: 240-440-2
- Commercial forms and appearance
- Available in crushed and granular forms, white to grey/brownish material.
- Physical properties
- Density: 2.2–2.9 g/cm³ (20 °C)
- Bulk density: 1.2–1.6 g/cm³
- Solubility in water: 0.032 g/L at 10 °C
- Chemical behaviour
- Reacts as an alkali in water; in presence of CO2 forms calcium and magnesium hydrogen carbonates.
- Purity criteria and limits
- Calcium magnesium carbonate content (dry): ≥ 95%
- MgCO3 (dry): ≥ 39%
- Insoluble residue in HCl (dry): ≤ 3%
- Trace element limits (mg/kg, dry):
- Antimony (Sb) ≤ 3
- Arsenic (As) ≤ 3
- Cadmium (Cd) ≤ 2
- Chromium (Cr) ≤ 10
- Lead (Pb) ≤ 10
- Mercury (Hg) ≤ 0.5
- Nickel (Ni) ≤ 10

- Test methods & sampling
- Sampling: follow ISO 3165 and ISO 6206
- Analytical methods: refer to EN 12485 for required test procedures
- Labelling, transport & storage
- Delivery modes: bags, containers, bulk
- No specific EU labelling required at publication date; follow applicable transport and safety regulations and clean packaging to avoid contamination
Applications and users
- Primary application: use of calcium magnesium carbonate in systems treating water intended for human consumption. The standard supplies technical requirements and test methods needed to ensure product quality and safety.
- Typical users:
- Water utilities and treatment operators
- Chemical manufacturers and suppliers of water-treatment chemicals
- Water quality laboratories performing conformity testing
- Regulatory bodies and procurement officers assessing product specifications
- Consultants and engineering firms specifying treatment chemicals
Related standards and references
- EN 12485 - test methods for calcium carbonate and related materials
- ISO 3165 - sampling of chemical products for industrial use
- ISO 6206 - sampling vocabulary for chemical products
- Relevant EU regulations (e.g., REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) may apply to manufacture, labelling or supply
For procurement, specification or compliance checks, reference EN 16003:2011 to confirm identity, purity criteria and required analytical methods when selecting calcium magnesium carbonate for drinking-water applications.
