Overview
SIST ISO 5658-2:2006/Amd 1:2011:2018 is an important amendment to the international standard outlining methods for reaction to fire tests, specifically focusing on the lateral spread of flame on building and transport products in vertical configurations. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this amendment refines the procedures and clarifies testing parameters to enhance safety evaluations related to flame spread on vertical surfaces.
The amendment updates the testing methodology to improve accuracy and consistency in assessing fire behavior of materials commonly used in the construction and transport industries. It introduces refinements in data calculation methods and validates repeatability and reproducibility through extensive interlaboratory trials.
Key Topics
Lateral Spread of Flame: The standard details how to measure and assess the spread of flame along vertical surfaces, critical to understanding fire dynamics on walls, panels, and transportation product exteriors.
Test Methodology Enhancements: Amendment 1 adds precision in calculating the longest flame spread duration, requiring it to correspond to a point at least 30 mm behind the maximum flame progression along the test specimen’s midline.
Interlaboratory Validation: A significant feature of this amendment is the inclusion of results from a 2008 third interlaboratory test conducted by ISO/TC 92/SC 1, involving seven laboratories and seven different materials such as plywood, fire-retardant plywood, gypsum board, polyisocyanurate foam with aluminum foil, polycarbonate sheet, fire-retardant particleboard, and PVC-coated steel sheet.
Repeatability and Reproducibility: The amendment provides detailed statistical analyses of test results, highlighting the consistency of critical parameters such as the critical heat flux at extinction (CFE) and the thermal energy associated with persistent combustion (Qsb). The data help laboratories and manufacturers understand the reliability of the test outcomes.
Harmonization with IMO Standards: By incorporating principles from IMO Resolution A.653(16), this amendment harmonizes ISO testing procedures with international marine safety regulations, facilitating global application and acceptance.
Practical Applications
Building Materials Testing: SIST ISO 5658-2:2006/Amd 1:2011:2018 is vital for manufacturers and safety inspectors to evaluate the fire resistance and lateral flame spread characteristics of vertical building products, aiding compliance with fire safety codes.
Transportation Industry: The standard is crucial for assessing flame spread on vertical surfaces of transport vehicles, including aircraft, ships, and railcars, ensuring materials meet stringent safety requirements.
Fire Safety Engineering: Fire safety professionals and engineers use this standard to design safer buildings and vehicles by choosing materials proven to resist flame spread, reducing fire hazards and improving occupant safety.
Quality Control in Manufacturing: Producers of construction and transport products utilize this test protocol to maintain quality control and certify materials meet required fire safety performance standards.
Related Standards
ISO 5725-2:1994: This standard is referenced within ISO 5658-2/Amd 1 for methods of determining repeatability and reproducibility of measurement techniques, supporting the statistical validity of fire testing results.
IMO Resolution A.653(16): International Maritime Organization standards that align with ISO 5658-2 amendments to ensure fire safety in maritime applications, particularly concerning flame spread assessment.
ISO/TC 92 Standards: Related ISO standards developed by the Technical Committee 92 address various aspects of fire safety, including fire testing methodologies, fire resistance of materials, and fire behavior.
SIST ISO 5658-2:2006/Amd 1:2011:2018 remains a critical document for improving safety measures against fire spread on vertical surfaces, supporting architects, engineers, manufacturers, and safety regulators worldwide in achieving higher levels of fire protection for both building and transport products.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
