SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008
(Main)Terminations for steel wire ropes - Safety - Part 1: Thimbles for steel wire rope slings
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for non welded general purpose steel thimbles produced from plate having dimensions in accordance with Figure 1. The thimbles are intended to be used in slings made with six or eight strand steel wire ropes from 8 mm to 60 mm diameter complying with EN 12385-4.
Reeving thimbles and solid thimbles are not covered by this standard.
The hazards covered by this standard are identified in clause 4.

SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 13411-1:2002+A1:2008, a CEN European Standard for safety in thimbles used in steel wire rope slings. It specifies minimum requirements and verification methods for non-welded general purpose steel thimbles so manufacturers, suppliers, and buyers can check fit, strength, and certification for ropes in lifting service.
What does SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 specify?
SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 covers non-welded general purpose steel thimbles made from plate and intended for slings using six- or eight-strand steel wire ropes from 8 mm to 60 mm diameter complying with EN 12385-4. Reeving thimbles and solid thimbles are outside its scope.
The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, hazards, safety requirements and/or measures, verification, and certificate, followed by informative Annex ZA and Annex ZB on EU Directive relationships. Table 1 links identified hazards to the clauses that address them, and Figure 1 gives the thimble dimensions.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008?
SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 sets out the dimensions, material, construction, type testing, and verification needed to control load-release risk and fitting errors in use.
Dimensions and fit
Clause 5.1 requires every thimble size to comply with Figure 1. In practice, the thimble has to match the rope-related dimensions shown in the standard so the sling assembly fits correctly and does not create avoidable stress.
Material and finish
Clause 5.2 requires steel conforming to EN 10025. The note on zinc coating gives a practical purchase point: if coating is used, the coating level and application method are part of what the buyer and supplier should agree.
Construction quality
Clause 5.3 requires thimbles to be free from flaws or defects, while allowing a small gap at the joint. The standard also leaves the choice between pointed and truncated ends to agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.
Type testing
Clause 5.4 requires a type test to show that the design, material, and manufacturing method can withstand the maximum loading conditions expected in normal use. Any change that could affect safety - such as material, manufacture, or critical dimensions - triggers retesting.
Test set-up and loading
Clause 6.1 requires the test rope to match the thimble nominal size, use one of the rope constructions from EN 12385-4 tables 6, 7, or 8 with a steel core, and have grade 1770. The load is applied through a pin of diameter 1.5 d, and the thimble is loaded axially to 27 % of the rope minimum breaking force. This gives a repeatable way to compare designs.
Pass-fail rule
After unloading, any permanent reduction in dimension 1 of Figure 1 must not exceed 15 % of its original value. Two tests are run on each size and design, and a retest applies if one sample fails. This tells a tester exactly when a design passes or fails.
Verification and certificate
Clauses 6.2 to 6.4 call for dimensional measurement, material verification from supplier records, and visual inspection for surface defects. Clause 7 requires a certificate, on request, stating conformity, the manufacturer or authorized representative, the nominal size, and a way to link the certificate to the thimble.
What terms does SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 define?
- Nominal size - the rope diameter for which the thimble is primarily designed.
- Type test - the loading test used to show that a design, material, and manufacturing method can meet the standard under use conditions.
- Thimble - a shaped metal insert used in a steel wire rope sling to support the eye and help control rope wear and deformation.
- CEN - the European Committee for Standardization, which approved the European Standard.
- EFTA - the European Free Trade Association, named in the annexes on EU Directive relationships.
- Steel wire rope sling - the lifting sling application for which these thimbles are intended.
Who uses SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008?
SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 is used by thimble manufacturers, sling makers, rope suppliers, purchasers, and quality or test staff involved in lifting equipment. It is also relevant for specifiers who need a defined rope size, surface treatment, testing route, and certificate content. The introduction also points buyers toward a certified quality assurance system such as EN ISO 9001 when they want consistent production.
What changed in SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 from the previous edition?
- SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 supersedes EN 13411-1:2002.
- SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 includes Amendment 1, approved by CEN on 18 September 2008.
