Jewellery and precious metals - Non destructive precious metal fineness confirmation by ED-XRF (ISO 23345:2021)

This document describes a non-destructive method to verify (confirm) the precious metal fineness of finished and semifinished jewellery item(s) considered homogeneous by ED-XRF (energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence), including alloys according to ISO 9202.
This document is not suitable for any coated items. WD-XRF (wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence) equipment cannot be used.

Overview

prEN ISO 23345 (ISO 23345:2021) specifies a non‑destructive ED‑XRF (energy‑dispersive X‑ray fluorescence) method to confirm the precious‑metal fineness of finished and semi‑finished jewellery and precious‑metal alloys (per ISO 9202). The standard is explicit that it is not suitable for coated items and that WD‑XRF equipment must not be used. It provides requirements for instrumentation, calibration, verification, measurement procedure, uncertainty evaluation and result interpretation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Instrumentation (ED‑XRF): X‑ray tube adapted for precious metals (minimum 50 kV, 40 W), primary filters, at least two collimators (one <1 mm and one ≥1 mm), camera for spot imaging, detectors (Si‑PIN or SDD), energy resolution ≤160 eV (Mn Kα), detectable elements Z = 22 (Ti) to Z = 92 (U).
  • Calibration standards: Minimum of 3 standards with known exact composition, flat/clean surface, thickness ≥0.5 mm, diameter ≥5× collimator, homogeneous; major element compositions should cover a range up to 50 ‰.
  • Method calibration and verification:
    • Each calibration standard: measured on at least 5 positions; standard deviation for the major element ≤ 1.2 ‰.
    • Use a reference material (RM)-preferably a CRM or material prepared under ISO 17034-for calibration verification; RM must not be a calibration standard and should closely match sample composition (major elements within ±10 ‰).
    • RM measured on ≥5 positions; difference between measured and declared RM value contributes to uncertainty and must be within specified limits.
  • Sample analysis: Clean/prep surface; analyse ≥3 spot positions, each with ≥3 replicates; replicate analysis time equals that used for RM; per‑set standard deviation for the major element must not exceed 1.2 ‰.
  • Uncertainty & reporting: Uncertainty is evaluated from the standard deviations of RM and sample measurements plus the RM measurement bias. Results are reported in parts per thousand (‰) as the mean of all measurements.

Practical applications and users

  • Quality control and incoming‑goods inspection in jewellery manufacturing
  • Non‑destructive fineness confirmation in retail and repair settings
  • Assay laboratories and metrology/quality assurance teams seeking rapid verification without consuming samples
  • Customs and trade‑compliance checks where preserving the item is required

Note: ISO 23345 is intended for confirmatory, non‑destructive testing; it is not suitable for regulatory hallmarking because ED‑XRF generally yields higher measurement uncertainty than destructive assay methods.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
