Overview

EN IEC 61557-17:2021 (also published as IEC 61557-17:2021) sets minimum performance and construction requirements for non‑contact AC voltage indicators used in low‑voltage distribution systems (up to 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC). The standard’s primary aim is to reduce the risk of electric shock caused by incorrect interpretation of an indicator’s output. It is intended for products used by electrically skilled persons and explicitly states that non‑contact indicators are not designed for testing the absence of operating voltage.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and user: Devices covered are non‑contact AC voltage indicators for use by trained personnel; misuse risk is addressed in requirements and testing.
  • Performance requirements: Defines minimum sensitivity, repeatability and operating uncertainty (B and B [%]) to quantify triggering behaviour and uncertainty of indication.
  • Trigger‑point and indication tests: Procedures to determine and verify the voltage level at which indicators respond (trigger point), plus optical visibility tests for the indicator output.
  • Safety requirements: Mechanical strength tests, safety evaluation (in line with IEC 61557‑1), and specific safety tests to reduce shock risk to operators and bystanders.
  • Battery test facility: Requirements for built‑in battery test or indication to avoid false negatives from depleted batteries.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): Immunity and emission requirements (referenced to IEC 61326‑1) to ensure reliable operation in real electrical environments.
  • Marking and operating instructions: Mandatory labelling and user guidance to prevent misuse and explain limitations (for example, not suitable for absence-of-voltage testing).
  • Type testing and conformity: Test sequence includes mechanical, indication, visibility, safety and EMC tests as part of type approval.

Applications and users

  • Used by electricians, maintenance technicians, installation engineers and inspection teams for quick detection of live AC conductors in low‑voltage environments.
  • Typical use cases: preliminary live voltage checks, troubleshooting, identifying live phases and verifying presence of AC voltage where non‑contact detection is appropriate.
  • Important: For confirming absence of hazardous voltage, a 2‑pole low‑voltage detector compliant with IEC 61243‑3 should be used instead.

Related standards

  • IEC 61557‑1:2019 / EN IEC 61557‑1 - general requirements for equipment for testing, measuring or monitoring protective measures.
